Pulled in driveway and engine started missing revved up a little tach stopped working and when it got down near idle engine started to limp. Shut off restarted same thing. Shut off again and it would not start. Pulled codes and they were 1693 companion and PO336 Crankshaft Position Sensor A Circuit Range/Performance. Pulled out Crankshaft sensor behind starter one heck of a job getting out. It was a little chewed up on end magnet from sensor showing. Did search on threads found out Cummins part#4002066. Called Cummins gave him engine number and he came up with part #4921601. He said part#4921601 is same sensor as part#4002066. Went to Cummins bought new sensor installed it. At least truck starts now put it is still throwing same codes. When I first start it up tach works but idles a little lower and after about 20 or 30 seconds tach stops working. Engine will rev up find but when it gets down near idle after revving it starts to limp then it clears up. Just for my own curiosity I pulled out crankshaft sensor that I just installed to make sure it was not getting chewed up by toner ring. It was OK. While I was at Cummins I bought a camshaft position sensor, can anyone tell me where it is located and what is involed to change it. Any help appreciated.

My 2000 did the same thing a few years ago, but the crank sensor took care of this problem. I just went to Auto Zone and had codes read and cleared. Maybe you got a bad sensor. The cam sensor should be behind the VP44 I think.

The camshaft sensor is below the injection pump and goes into the back of the timing gear case. It's a bearcat to change. Did you check to make sure the tone ring was tight on the crankshaft? It is in two segments, so one may be tight and the other loose, so you need to check it 3 places by rotating the crank. If the old one was chewed up, it's loose and will take out the new one too. If it (tone ring) comes off it can do terminal engine damage.
