Brought my 99' in to the dealer for the typical oil leak that runs down and collects at the bottom of the trans. bellhousing. I point out that there is drops of oil on the back oil pan bolts. Thay are telling me that they have to replace the pan gasket... . ok, I can buy that. They also tell me that my rear main seal is leaking too. I dont buy that!! No evidence of oil inside the torque converter inspection cover area and nothing coming from the center area between the trans and motor. They say that the transmission has to be pulled to get to either gasket. Can the oil pan be removed without having to pull the trans out?? This is some major work by idiots I really dont trust. Do you think they would have cleaned things up and tried retorqueing the pan bolts first... . Nooooo!! That is the first thing I'm going to do. Any advice???

do NOT let them pull the pan , the leak is the the breather tube on the front of the engine , it is blown all over the place by the fan and driving .

to confirm this get a 3/4 double ended hose barb , about 6 feet of 3/4 inch hose and some tywraps . put the hose barb in the end of the breather tube , connect the 6 feet of hose and tie it off to the frame back towards rear of cab , go to the car wash and wash off the engine , the trans , the fan and the engine compartment and drive it for a few days , if that area is still wet with oil then maybe you have a pan or valvecover leak .

I agree with Mm, the idiot dealier and his monkeys probably don't know there is a breather bottle on the truck. Save yourself some grief and try the 3/4" hose trick before you really do have a pan and rear main leak cause under qualified people caused more harm than good. Install the hose, wash off the oil with simple green and wait and see what happens. My bet is no more oil...

I have the same oil situation, bottom of the inspection plate, oil pan and trans housing are just damp with oil. My breather tube has been extended to the area next to the fuel tank and has been for the last 14K miles. Never leaves a drop on the driveway. I am going to be watching more carefully as the weather warms up. Doesn't look like the rear main, could be the oil pan gasket or the valve cover gasket.

Mopar Muscle,

You actually think that they would try something that makes sense first?? I am going to retorque the pan bolts tonight. I'm hoping that it is just an accumulation of vaporized oil collecting from the blow-by tube. If it is, wouldnt the axle and diff. be loaded too? It is greasy and coated but not dripping like the back of the pan. I degreased it this morning and drove 35 miles to work and it's dry..... mmmmmm, doesnt sound like a rear main to me!!!

One other thing you might check is the oil return from the turbo charger. I missed the gasket when I had my turbo off.

I know it is not the valve cover because I have bben down that road already. No oil is anywhere above the oil pan bolt flange. I thought about the blowby tube, but I have a 6" extension tube dropping it lower. I will try the 3/4" hose trick too. Anybody know if the trans. has to be removed to get the oil pan out? Service manual indicates that it does. Thanks all!!

challenger , if the service manual stes it then it must be true #ad
, they wouldn't have a tech do anymore work than necessary ... heres a silly thought , anyone get under there with a wrench to see if the bolts are loose ?

what i said above is what is happening to my truck , its a 2000 and has a bottle , the 99's have a tube that extends lower than the 2000 and bottle does .
