As a rule I always watch the attendant when refueling. However today I had my head turned when looking for my cell phone. When I looked up he had pumped about 8 gallons of gas in my tank. Luckily the motor was not running but I did need to turn the key to the on position to unlock the steering when loading it onto the rollback.

Other than dropping and cleaning out the tank what else should be done or checked ? Would the pump have run with the key in the on position and sent gas into the system ?

The local garage is very good but has no diesel experience does not want to settle for just cleaning out the tank without more info so I told him I would post the question here. What further steps if any are needed here.

The tank was very low and had low fuel light on

The best thing to do is drop the tank and get all of the gas out. Then reinstall the tank, fill it full with desiel, change the fuel filter, and start it up. If it was not running when it was poisoned, it will be OK. If just the key was on and the engine off, the fuel pump will not be running. It will run for a second or two when the key is turned on and will not run again unless you cycle the key or crank it over.

thanks that's exactly what I wanted to have them do but my being handicapped in diesel knowledge needed input from someone here. If you ever a problem with any of your 426 Hemi's drop me a note. thanks Fred

The same thing happened to me several years ago. The gas station paid for the whole deal but ,think about this. If you have it towed to a dealer there will be a record for ever that your truck had gasoline put into it. So if you are still under warranty and you have a injector go bad in a few thousand miles "just by coincidence" The dealer is likely going to blame the gasoline. In fact a lot of possible warranty work may be a problem. How do I know because I was in a panic and insisted they take it to a dealer. Knock on wood everything was ok. Good luck to you and from your description I doubt you will have any trouble also.

Well, then an independent shop. I'd rather have it done right, by someone who will back up their work.

Were it me, I could do it myself, and not have an issue, but the stations is going to pay double my side work rate, which would be slightly more than a shop.

It's on their dime, have it towed to a dealer and let them deal with it.

After having had experiences with all the local dealers regarding the infamous recall H46 that nearly led to blows I have become persona non grata #1 on their list. I trust my truck with the local independant shop. :-{}

Have the station make all the arrangements to have the work done and pay for it. Then have a letter drawn up, preferably by an attorney, that states they are responsible for the gas poisoning, that they acknowledge the ramifications of gasoline introduced into a diesel fueled engine, and they will take financial responsibility for any fuel related problems that may or may not happen for an agreeable amount of time or mileage from the incident. You might also talk to your insurance company for guidance too, they should be able to help you on this as well.

Thanks that's an an excellent suggestion

well you arent goin to have any injector problems since you didnt start the truck. you just need to drain the tank and you are good to go.

Was passing thru Oregon on my way to Olympic Peninsula for vacation stoped in Canyon Vill OR (I think thats how you spell it) I got out to splash in some fuel. Some kid came running out screaming you cant do that. Funny ive know how from about 12 years old. He said some kind of law about the station attendant has to pump your fuel well far be it for me to take away the fun of filling a tank. I still watch to make sure I dont somehow get bit in the butt. Never been to New Jersey to close to New York (city) ill see if I can back out of this one without starting a war

I had to take a spash of fuel in Oregon one time too, and after I couldn't find a self-serve pump, I finally pulled into a full-serve for 5 gallons to get me on into Washington. After explaining that it was against the law there to pump your own fuel, he asked for the key to my gas cap. Now keep in mind that I hadn't shut the truck off, so we were having to talk up a bit over it through the driver's window. Anyway, I told him I'd give him the key to the FUEL cap as soon as he hung up that gasoline hose and got a firm grip on the diesel spout!! Listing to the unmistakable rattle of the diesel, looking at the "diesel fuel only" sticker inside the fuel door next to the green fuel cap, and I'm the one who doesn't know how to fuel up my rig??? Really???

In Oregon It is a make work job, to put people to work. I've had they tell me to go a head and pump my own, because it was diesel, not gas.
