Hi All,

I recently bought a 1981 International S1854 truck with the dt 466 engine. The truck has been sitting for about a year and a half & the waterpump needs to be replaced per the owner. Per the owner the engine ran when the truck was parked.

I have the assistance of a mechanically inclined friend but he is only available tomorrow and the day after so I have the following questions... .

1) Does anybody know how to prime the injection pump?

2) is there a solenoid like on the cummins that needs to be energized to allow the fuel to flow?

3) I hear that starting fluid should not generally be used to start a diesel... . what is a good substitute?... . Wd 40?

4) Any other tips and tricks in starting would be greatly appreciated...

5) Is there an online manual that would have this info as well?

Thanks!

Andrew

well before I take the time to change the water pump. I would make sure it run's get some fresh fuel in it, check the oil make sure it's clean,, no water, or diesel mixed with it. Most of the time I use silicone spray to fire one off with that need's some help.

Dt 466 is a pretty good engine, for just dose a good job of screwing them up with all thier junk.

These engines usually are pretty basic. look for a manual shut off cable in the cab on the dash, push it in. look for a intake heater like ours, but probebly not be one. they have a bosh pump like ours, and a manual pump like ours, with a primer. Thay have a bleed screw on the side of the pump, a screw with a jam nut, crack this and pump the primer button till you have fuel coming out, and yes you can use starter fluid. Use just enough to get started, you can wash the cylinders. too much,----------------------------------------------------------------BOOM!!!

If you apply to the intake it'll take a few seconds Good luck.

1) check that water pump. If the bearing feels tight, you should be fine to try starting it before you change it. If the pully is loose, You might take the belt off, until you are sure the engine is going to run.

2) Find The fuel primer pump. Pump it until your arm feels like it is going to fall off. (or until you can hear fuel moving through the system. )

3) Check for an air heater or glow plugs. If the vehicle has an air heater or glow plugs, You should not use any kind of aresol to start the engine. If, it does not have either, a small amount of ether will help get it going.

4) if it still will not start, you can take the fuel lines loose it the injectors. & Bleed the injection lines Just like a 12V CTD.

5) All Bosch inline Fuel pumps have a lever-style fuel shutoff(that I have ever seen). It could have a cable on the dash for a shutoff, or it could have a selonoid like our 12v trucks.

Pretty simple engines. Good luck with the ole dt466. P.
