Hi Guys! Been a member for over a year, and a long time reader of these forums but this is my first post.

My 99' 3500 24v dually auto, has just started to not like OD. I have not really counted the actual shifts, but believe it is on lockup when it tries to engage but then decides not to. This happens any time between 45-60MPH and never stops until I push the "od off button". With OD disengaged no problem. Truck has only 50k miles and is completely stock. Feels like a sensor or relay or possibly bad connection somewhere but not sure. Fluid is bright red with no discoloration and at the correct level. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance?

could the cruse control be on and light not working , check at start up lamp test , and under way try on off of cruse control . lol Ron in Louisville ky

MEsnes,

Sounds to me like maybe the 18-02-99 pcm reflash is what you need. Going off your post it sounds like what mine was doing (shifting back and fourth continuously) and the reflash did fix the problem, and the best part was it was free!

Ron, Read your response and then ran out and gave it a try... ... . Cruise is not on. . At least indicator is looking to be fully operable. I took the truck down the road while I was at it and set it at 60 and truck did same thing. Brough it up to about 75 and seemed to do it less. Up grades and flat roads are worst. Slightly downhill makes a huge difference. Thanks for the info... Mike

K nees. . I love your response and boy do I hope you are right. Espscially beacause of the $$$$$! I thought of that but did not think that would be the cause since it started all of a sudden. Truck was in dealer last month for yearly inspection and a hood latch recall. Think they would have reflashed it then? From what you said in your response it definitly does sound like both of our trucks were doing the same thing... I am going to give that a try tommorow:) :) Thanks for your help!

I think the reflash will take care of your problems as it did mine, but with 50,000 miles on your truck I don't think it will be free. The best thing is though your truck will work properly.

What k Nees said- mine did the same thing and the reflash did the trick-only my dealer (Klement, Decatur, TX) charged me $65 even tho there is a service bulletin out for this malfunction. After the reflash, my cruise control worked for the first time as well!

GOT 1999 ,2500 4 BY 4 LONG BOX WITH 40K ON TRANS , THE PROBLEM WAS WOULDN,T LOCKUP IN OD IT WOULD KEEP GOING IN AND OUT.

IT WAS THE INPUT SHAFT SEAL ON THE TRANS WAS BAD PER DEALER WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY

THANKS GARRETT:--)

Garrett, Either you have an extended warrranty or you have a very good dealer. The bumper to bumper warranty Chrysler had in 1999 was three years or 36,000 mile warranty which ever came first. The engine is 5 year or 100,000 miles.

Ron

YEP: THANKS FOR THE EXTENDED WARRANTY AND THE 1850. FOR THE WARRANTY COST, WHICH UP TODATE I HAVE 4750. 00 IN WARRANTY REPAIRS

THANKS GARRETT:{

My 99 did same thing. Try this, it has worked for alot of folks. At the front drivers side of the engine, just below the TPS, there is a loom of wires coming up from the underside of the pickup. The loom splits three ways, with one way going to the TPS. Take a knife and split just the loom casing down about 12-20 inches, then seperate the three bundles of wires. This usually works, as the problem is electrical noise.

RONSRAM,

Don't remember exactly on the miles but sure it was in the 55k to 65k range and they done it for free(have no extended warranty either). Yes, I was surprised!

MEsnes,

Mine started all of the sudden also, some days were worse then others though. Also don't think they will just reflash your truck with out having a problem or telling them. There are many re-flashes available. Hope thats all it is.

Thank you guys for all your advice. I am going to the dealer Monday. The service writer at my local dealer wants to feel exactly what it is doing. It feels like something like a reflash to me I hope. I will keep you posted.

Thanks Again,

Mike Esnes

Mike, I have had exactly the same problem and the fix is cheap and simple. CLEAN THE BATTERY TERMINALS I know this sounds too easy but give it a try. Corroded terminals can cause various weird problems and erratic TC locking and unlocking is one.
