On my way to work this morning, my truck made a bad moaning sound. As i started the truck, and i pressed in the brake to put it into reverse, i felt the brake pedal kind of stutter a little bit, then at the same time (or right before or right after), the truck made a bad moaning sound. The sound seems to increase or decrease with the engine rpm. And it also at first seemed to make a louder sound when i turned the vehicle, but it seemed ok while turning when i got off the highway and closer to work.

What the heck is wrong with my truck!??!?! I bought the truck used back in september of this year, and it currently has 41,000 miles on it. I recently replaced all the fluids with amsoil fluids, changed all filters with fleetguard filters, and added a mag hytec dd trans pan. Other than that (to my knowledge) the truck is stock.

Please help. The truck is sitting at the parking lot at work, and i really need to use the truck later this afternoon. But if it is something bad, i can get a rental car and drive that for the weekend if i have to until i can get the truck fixed.

Thanks,

Tim

I'd bet it's your power steering pump. First time I heard it I wondered too what the heck was wrong! It makes lots of moaning noises when it's cold out. Some days when it's really cold mine never stops moaning.

Well, I live near Chicago, IL, and it got pretty cold last night. Close to or below freezing point i'd estimate. I called the dodge dealership and the soonest they could get me in to get it checked out is thursday. He said to check all fluid levels, and i did, and they checked out fine. Is this something that happens to you on a regular basis? And does that moaning sound mean that the power steering pump is starting to go bad and will need replacement soon? Or is it just related to the cold weather?

Thanks for the help,

Tim

Mine has done it every winter since I've had the truck new. It usually starts doing it once we drop below freezing. It's just something my truck has done and it's never given me a problem. Obviously it hasn't done this to you before and I'd bet when the weather warms up a bit over the weekend it won't do it.

da moans

MIne does it too. It will not moan if the truck is plugged in, as the fluid will be warmed by the underhood heat. You can also try changing the fluid to a synthetic one. I think the fluid should be changed regularly anyway, just because the pump works hard with the steering and braking.
