I need help! I'm trying to install a Borgeson shaft, and need to know what the dang "star-shaped" bolts are called that hold the steering shaft flange on (and the bolts that act as the safety pins are the same). I called Borgeson and they did not know. I bought a star socket-- six points-- but didn't work... . these bolts appear to be 12 small points. What size are they and what are they called? And you don't have to answer this, but why in the %$# wouldn't a more common bolt have worked???

Sounds like the weird 12 point bolts like on my starter or front hub bearing. Kind of threw me at first (Ithought it was a Torx head) but a standard 12 point socket fit on there.

Good luck with it

yeah i do remember those where a bit funny when i rebuilt my steering coupler. i do remember i used a 12 point socket but i had to experiment with what size fit best. i think one i kinda rounded off a bit and had to use vise grips or something,

Spline head bolts

Scott I just installed a Borgeson shaft in my truck a few weeks ago. Used a 3/8" 12 point box end wrench on these fasteners, fit just fine. The hard part was removing the roll pin at the steering box end, brute force requiered.

When you guys installed it, were you able to use the existing rubber disk in the rag joint, or did you also have to order a new disk with the steering shaft from Borgeson?

Thanks,

Mike

Thanks everyone. The 12 point is what I didn't try, but yes the 3/8" 12 point works great. They're off now. Roll pin out, too! Thanks!

Rag Joint

Mike I didn't take any chances, not knowing the condition of the existing rag joint. I went ahead and ordered a new rag joint from Borgeson along with the shaft.

Yeah, that's about what I thought. Not too long after I posted my question, I decided it was worth the $15 and just ordered it.

Thanks!

Mike

Well, it sure would have been nice if the clerk at Borgeson would have asked if I wanted a new rag joint! I didn't know they offered them... I re-used the original; it looks to be in real good shape. Project complete (can't wait for the test drive) thanks to you helpful TDR members!
