O. K. , here it goes……I had my head gasket replaced by Dodge about 12,000 +/- ago, and everything is / was great and the truck runs like it should. However, just recently I noticed a noise coming from the front of the motor. It sounds like a chatter, almost like a belt tensioner or pulley that is going bad. I checked everything and that is defiantly not the problem. The noise is intermediate and seems to only happen when the motor is warm and at idle. It disappears if I bring the motor up to 1,000 ish RPM. The truck is running great.

So what can it be. I almost think the valves need to be adjusted? They were obviously adjusted when they did the head gasket. Is it possible they need it again in 12,000 miles? Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

get an engine stethescope to isolate where exactly the noise is coming from. it's easy enough to check valve lash too, only about an hour or two.

Since the noise disappears above idle and when warm it is most likely not the valve lash. Is your engine oil level above full? Have you tried changing the oil?

my 03 and 04 50k and 90k both do it and have since new irratates the snot out of me dont know what the chatter is but they keep runnin

Alternator Bearings? Idler pulley? Power steering pump? If you don't want to run it with the belt off, try spraying some glass cleaner on the belt near 1 pulley at a time, allowing time for it to evaporate between trying the different pulleys. I have isolated many problems this way. Some times the spring itself will make noise in the tensioner.

Good Luck and please share what you find

I like the suggestion of spraying the glass cleaner on the belt. Might save from having to take off the belt. Let us know.

Good Luck

I had a horrible noise (clatter) from under the hood. Initially I suspected a fan clutch or something similar... since it just appeared one day. Couldn't isolate and nothing seemed loose. Making a left turn into a parking lot yesterday generated a terrible clatter, p/s and p/b went away but I managed to make it out of traffic (good thing I wasn't sipping my coffee!)

Turns out that the Idler pulley had pretty much "eaten" it's mount and the serpentine belt was shredded. Engine runs without clatter anymore :-/ Just have to figure out how to repair (and what) in the parking lot OR tow? Anyone have any input as to how difficult this is in a parking lot ?

Thanks!
