Had ujoint and carrier bearing on rear shaft go bad on my 05 3500 manual 4X4 dually long box quad cab:{. Took the shaft to a large well known driveline place nearly 60 miles away in Billings MT. Brought it back to the truck to instal and found the harmonic balancer was removed#@$%!. When I called the driveline place they said it was not needed:--). Is this true or did Dodge spend all that money developing this truck for nothing ?

The shop is correct if your truck had the DS that came with the donut balancer right behind the front yoke... those DO go bad and can make the vibrations WORSE. Proof is in the pudding, how does the truck drive now??

That being said, I removed the CB bearing and entire CB support bracket and then installed an oem one piece aluminum DS on my truck…NO more center bearings/bushings to fail, no more launch shudder and , for me at least, no more highway speed vibrations… next time your center bearing goes bad, you might want to consider the one piece aluminum driveshaft replacement.

Dodge put that balancer there for a reason, NVH. It is responsible for taking the harmonics out of the driveline and those annoying vibes. Unfortunately the things were a bit of problem when they started to wear. Rubber mounted dampers have a finite lifetime with the amount of harmonics the ISB creates.

See what it feels like, you might be fine if everything else is tight and balanced.

FWIW, while it was put there to help with NVH, you can't even get that type of DS with damper any more... Ram has moved away from them for a reason (eventual failure causing more NVH) and I believe that your 2005 was one of the last years to use one. That being said, you CAN buy an aftermarket, smaller fluid filled DS balancer form BalanceMasters.

Nope, you can still get the one piece and 2 piece DS's with the dampers on them, or could a while ago. All the new trucks I looked at had the same damper to solve the same problem.

I am pretty sure that they stopped using them after the NV5600 on early 2005 trucks??

My truck is a late 05 auto and it had from New. 3 years ago when I bought the 1 piece I had a choice of with or without damper. I will have to look again but pretty sure the 2015's I was looking at had a damper also.

Think this thread may have answered my next question, I get a weird driveline vibration at cruising speed that gets worse over 60.
Gonna look to see if there's one still under mine.
Hope it's easy to remove.
