Archived Help With 2002 5.9 24Valve Cummins

There is bad humming noise comeing from the front of the truck. It does it off and on and is sometimes worse then other times. When it is doing it, it gives off FAST but soft vibration in the sterring wheel. It's annoying as hell need to figure out what it is. It tends to do it more when the truck is cold. Any help would greatly be appreciated... ... . PLEASE HELP!

I had a similar problem with my truck and it turned out to be the double cardan front ujoint (transfer case end). I'm assuming it's a 4x4? It actually took me quite awhile to find it. There never was any play in the joint.

You need to give us more information about your truck!



2wd or 4wd (4x2 or 4x4)? Auto. or Manual. It would help if you filled out your signature.



Sounds like a wheel bearing (hub assembly). Or a drive shaft (lots of them on a 4x4). Bad alignment and cupped tires (severley worn or very bad) can create a sound that is similar to a bad bearing.



Is it louder when turning one way or the other?



Does the noise increase with speed and or RPM?



Does the noise appear only at certain speeds and go away at other speeds?



Have you tried taking the truck out of gear when you hear the noise (at that speed)?



Need more info... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... .....

My truck info: 2002 5. 9 24Valve Cummins, 4x4, maunual trans.



Seems to make the noise the same amount when turing either way (left or right)

Defintly makes the noise in and out of gear

Dose sound like a bad bearing, but I get a vibratioin in the steering wheel. A Fast vibration.

Makes the noise at all speeds but speraticlly.

Everytime I get the noise I get the vibrtions



Hope this help and anyh other info you may be able to give, would greatly be appreciated. Thanks for your help thus far.

Ok... ... I'm not that familiar with the 4x4 front end. Hopefully someone will chime in with some good advice.



Definitely sounds like a problem with the 4wd. system. IE: Axle, bearing or u-joints (as mentioned above).



Are there any obvious leaks, bare metal (scraped) or grease blown out of a joint?



You need to get underneath or get it in the air and start pulling on stuff.

Is it only at a certain speed/s?



Then I would lean towards a tire balance problem.

If your 2002 doesn't have the central axle disconnect, your front driveshaft is spinning all the time. Remove the front driveshaft (10 minutes) and drive it and see if the problem is gone.

check your power steering fluid. I have a 02 that made the same noise and it was about 3/8" low.

problem solved, thank you. Dumb as it sounds, it was the power steering fluid.

quick question refering to the central axle disconnect (CAD?) is this system available on all 2nd generations or just the 01 and 02's? If i'm understanding the CAD system correctly does it disconnect the front differential from the front driveshaft so it does not spin when driving? Do you have to get under the truck to disconnect it or is is a lever or button? thanks for any answers. i don't have a truck yet just researching before buying.

My understanding of the CAD is all 2002 trucks built AFTER Jan. 1 2002 did NOT have the disconnect. I know mine does not. You can tell by looking for a little box like cover on the passenger side of the front axle. This houses the vacuum hoses for the CAD. If no box, no CAD.
