Help with 8.3 cummins

A 6.0 with problems? Say it ain't so!

Does anyone out there have a shop manual for the 8. 3? i am building a shortblock at work via NO MANUAL. If someone does I have a few questions. And 90% of what we do is domestic made, i. e. JD, Ford, IH, AC, all ag engines. And we do little to no cummins stuff. Not that we are short on blocks and heads for any of them we just don't have to sell them very often so we have no books on them. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated, here they are.



1. ) What size are the soft plugs? I am guessing either 20. 5 or 21. 5, secondly does both front and back get pluged (on the galley for the cam followers) or just the back?



2. ) What is the approved liner heighth?



3. ) What is the approved piston protrusion?



4. ) What clearances am I allowed on Main brgs? and Rod Brgs?



5. ) What is the allowed endplay on the crank.



6. ) (Don't laugh we really aren't sure on this) Which way do the rods assemble with the piston? I. E. part # on rod towards front of engine? (I know thats how the 3. 9 and 5. 9 are put together but I'm just not willing to guess on a customer engine. )



If anyone can answer these that would be great.

Take your engine serial number and go here http://free-quickserve.cummins.com/. You should be able to find what you need.



1- The back gets plugged, I have no idea what size, I buy it from the Cummins parts dept. The cam has to stick out the front for the gear to hook to the crank.

2-000-. 003"

3- What ever you get I guess, I have never measured it.

4- Have never measured a bearing on a Cummins engine, if you took STD. out put STD. in providing the crank doesn't need a grind. You cant buy . 001,. 003" oversize like some engines.

5- Don't know without looking should be on Quick serve.

6- General rule of thumb is to put the rod bearing tangs to the camshaft side, on a c series rod it really doesn't matter as long as you put them all in the same direction, also check for rod side play after they are in and torqed.

About how much does your place charge for an 8. 3 rebuild?

Is this for a tractor which has been "re-powered"? Just curious.

I couldn't tell you what they charge. I work for Abilene Machine, here in Abilene Ks, with you being in CA. You should check with Kern County Implement. Thats our 'sister' store out there. We do all the building and ship to them. Or you can check out the main website at www.abilenemachine.com It should answer all of your questions.

Don't forget about grading the pistons if this is a mechanical fuel engine. If I remember right, there are "A", "B", & "C" pistons, and you have to check piston height at TDC to determine which are needed. I had to do this once, and I found it to be a real PITA.

Well we build it, having consulted with several people and no one could find a spec regarding the maximum allowable Piston Protrusion, so bascially we just went with what we had. I feel pretty comfortable about it though. this is what they came out to be.

Front of Engine to Back (order of numbers in inches ofcoarse)

1. ) . 012-. 015

2. ) . 014-. 015

3. ) . 016-. 018

4. ) . 015-. 018

5. ) . 014-. 016

6. ) . 012-. 016



We figured 6 was pushing it with . 004 diff on the same piston but not really having anything to go by we let it slide this time. We normally don't like anymore than. 003 diff on the same piston just as a company policy.

I thought this was only for the B series. I very well could be wrong.

Yup, you are right. Took me a while to find it.

Gee I wonder how many engines are out there that are technically incorrect.

No sweat A. Johnson, I was hoping I was right, I mean after all, I remember living through that rebuild pretty well. That crap really got me fired-up when I was in the process because of the vague service literature that I had to go with at the time. You know how it goes. :)
