A guy I know just bought a 1st gen. 4x4 for $900(why can't I find these deals). What happens it will not start if you shut it off for more than a few minutes. It will fire with ether or if you crank it right after you shut it off. It has a new lift pump and starter. What do you 1st gen guys think. I'm one of those "over-valved"guys:rolleyes: ;) so any info appreciated... Doug

Sounds like air is getting in the lines from somewhere. How does it run once you get it started? If there is some (or a lot of) white smoke, it could be timing. At $900 sale price, it could be why it was so cheap. Could also be injecotr pump- some parts could be leaking internally or worn out, so it doesnt hold its prime.

Anyone else? I'm by far not a guru on this topic, or any other for that matter. I do know the VE should pump enough fuel at start up to start; not sure how, but I've read that the VE flows a ridiculous amount of fuel to start the engine. Must be why mine starts at 20 deg when I forget the intake heaters.

DO NOT USE ETHER!!! I know you hear this all the time for any engine made after 1980, but if you use it regularly, it will cause all kinds of problems, from lack of cylinder lubrication at start up, to blowing the head off when it hits the intake heater. I guess it wouldnt hurt to use a few times to get it started for troubleshooting, but I'd still recommend something else.

Yea,I warned him about the ether,I don't know if he'll listen or not. It seems to run fine after he gets it started,no white smoke or miss. Did notice some rusty fuel lines possibly sucking air but not wet. Could it be a weak shut off solenoid???... Doug

idon't know mine is doingteh same now it won't start in s50-60deg temps argh. . pain in the butt. . seems like its losing its prime some where as i can mess with it for about 1 hr and it will finally start. . but when its cranking i don't get any white smoke as if its not getting fuel . . so that leads me to the fuel system issue, also my grid heater is bad i need another. . any easy way to check lift pump. . i know the primer lever doesn't seem to do much no resistance when i move it etc. . and when i hooked up a small electric (facucet) fuel pump inline to the lift pump and prime everything i finallygot it statred and it reved better and felt better with the electric pump inline so maybe my lift pump is going bad. . once th etruck is started it runns ok and if i shut it off and restart it within a few hours its fine but over night if doesn't want to start... any other ideas?. . i know th eengien is ok as it started last winter fine in zero degree of less temps. . so 50-60 degree should be fine haha

best place to buy a lift pump and grid heater and any price range for them?

thanks

Deo

Try checking the KSB switch to see if it functioning correctly. When the engine is first started the KSB advances the timing and jumps the fuel delivery to get things going. If the truck runs when it is started but is hard starting and you don't get a lot of white smoke it could be there is not enough fuel. Interior wear on the pump can also effect the starting sequence so it may be time to pull the pump. Even at -20 F if the pump is good and the start sequence right the motor will fire and run. Without the grid heaters its another story. The motor wil fire if everything is right but will not keep running. At any temp above 20 F it should fire on the first revolution and keep running with or without grid heater working. Smokes like a chimney but it will run. In both cases it sounds like there is start fuel delivery problem. Just my . 02 worth. Good luck.

The KSB solenoid is part of the injection pump it is just below the manual fuel shut-off lever. Its purpose is to advance the timing in cold weather start-up. To check the KSB if it is cold outside and just after you start the truck(with a cold engine) pull the little spade connector at the end of the KSB and you will hear a definite change in engine sound and the color of the exhaust will change.

The following will show you a picture of the KSB - with thanks to our leader Bushwakr
