i have a 96 cummins and i just put on a 5 inch single stack :) Now i just want to get some black smoke rolling out of that puppy. I know that it is a manual fuel pump and i was wondering if anyone knew how far i can turn it up without hurting anything? I also would like to know exactly where to turn it up. I found the fuel pump and on the driversside the is a black rubber cover and when i take it off there is a long white tube. Is the hex key located in that tube? The truck is bone stock except for the stack but i am planning on doing some major modifications :)

Thanks,

John Giangola

Whatever you are looking at is not the way to "turn up" a P7100 injection pump. There is a selection of after market torque (fuel) plates you can select and install. They give you a possible variety of power increases. You can turn the AFC starwheel to get more smoke on acceleration. Bigger injectors will also make more power. There are other things you can do, but a hex key ain't one of them. Read this forum for a lot of threads on increasing power.

Before you add more fuel, you need to add at least an egt gauge. Just sliding the plate forward gave me too high egts pulling my boat up long grades. The fuel plate is underneath the afc housing, which is attached to the injection pump. A search on fuel plate will give you hours of reading. Also if you haven't taken care of the kdp, do that first. That is a dowel pin that can come loose inside the timing case and get caught up in the gears and cost a lot of money to repair. Happened to mine before I bought it.
