This is what I did to get mine apart, remove all the bolts that hold the hot end to the center section (the fourth one I couldn't get out because it hit on the center scetion so I left it in) remove the loose clamp plate and leave the other held by the fourth bolt hanging loose. Reinstall the other 3 bolts and place shims under the heads so that when you back them out pressure is placed on the hot end equally over all four bolts. When you have pressure on the bolts have someone hold the compressor side and preferably using a large brass punch and a 3 lb. hammer smack the hot end going round in a circle, after a while check the pressure on the bolts, back out more as needed. Keep it up and soon it won't ring like a bell (more of a thud sound) you know it is on it's way. Careful with the bolts, shim as needed to keep at least 3 threeds engaged in the housing, don't want to strip those things. Last thing use PB Blaster as a penatrant or the old yellow and white can of Liquid wrench, in my opion they're much better at breaking lose rust than WD-40.

Good luck!

PS be extremly careful not to nick or cause any damage to the turbine wheel it doesn't take much to throw off the ballance of the pinwheels!!

Thanks Alan,

That did the trick. Thought i was doomed intil i checked in the rafters and doug out a box of old tools that my dad left me and there was a brass punch. BINGO:D now the truck has a 12cm housing.

It was interesting to see the boost come on much sooner although i think it is a little less potent on top

FYI the 12cm housing is a non waste gated version and was the exact same lenghth is the 18cm therefor no mods to the down pipe:D

The neighbor is impressed with the lost lag

now for some pump tweaking

Thanks

Just wack it with a hammer! :D Next time you can use a hammer if you make sure it is coming off even (don't let the vanes get bound). Be careful on the pump adjustments without an intercooler or gauges. A little does a lot! The diaphram can be turned without worrying about the EGT's.

Your best bet is to just tweak the pump fuel screw a round or so. It mildly raises the other settings, and will allow you to get quite a kick out of it without blasting a lot of smoke.

You did not lose any high-end power... It's just that the rush of power came in early, instead of waiting until late in the rpm range.

If this were an intercooled engine with the small tip injectors, i'd tell you to change injectors first...

BTW, where did that housing come from? An easy to change 12 would be awesome! Even better would be a 14...

Just for next time... One of the things we used at the shop to get them apart was to build some smooth gently tapered wedges we could pound (not very hard) into the gap to build tension between bolt and housing, and then a brass hammer to whack the housing. And PB Blaster is FAR better than WD 40. It needs to soak a while, but it loosens the bolts AND cuts the carbon and rust packed into the gaps that makes the housing hard to move.

Put it back together with all new bolts and liberal doses of anti-sieze. The fold-over locking tabs will keep it from coming loose.

Power Wagon,

The 12cm housing came fro Hitech Turbo 801-268-9721 talk to Mark. fyi semi backordered so it might take some time to get one but well worth it. with the exception of seperating the housing from the turbo the install was a snap. good luck and i will talk to you soon

Hey Diesel Dan!

The Non-Wastegated 12cm2 sounds awesome for the '89!

Have you convinced your neighbor to become a TDR member yet?

KEENO:D

Hello KEENO,

Why would he need to be come a member when he has me as a neighbor:D Actually whe have a agreement i take care of his mechanic needs and he takes care of all my house painting needs (a deal for me as he has my old well maintained truck and i have a 35year old house and a wife that changes her mind alot:rolleyes: It is interesting that he has an old 350 chebby 4x4 with a rebuilt motor but he thinks there is something wrong with it as the power just doesn't seem to be there any more:D yes he was hooked when he took my old truck up to his property in northern cal and ran 80-85 all the way and got 16. 5mpg. I should have let him borrow it before he bought it and raised the price when he came back :D

Best to all
