Archived Help with cracked exhaust manifold

Just changed the oil today because we are leaving tomorrow with the trailer on a camping trip @ 250 miles away. Noticed the exhaust manifold has two cracks @ 1 1/2" pre turbo.

1. What is the best option for replacement?

2. I realize I will loose some power, but It shouldn't come apart if I drive with the cracked manifold should it?



I already have Banks exhaust and want a bolt in replacement without getting creative with post turbo modifications.

I just installed a new manifold on a '99 truck. I got the new manifold from cummins for under $200. I used all new bolts, studs, nuts, and gaskets. Total parts was under $250 and it took about 2-2 1/2 hours. I didn't take the turbo loose from the exhaust or oil lines. I just used a small ratchet strap to hold it out of the way. Be sure to use antisieze on all the bolts and nuts.



The truck that I installed it on ran for over a year with the cracked manifold. It's not ideal, but shouldn't damage anything.

It "Should" be OK. When you get back, get an ATS, HTT or another after market manifold. They have 3 pieces that slip together to let the engine and manifold to grow and move around. The cost is about the same as the Factory manifold. Moose

Ditto what Moose said. I noticed the crack on my manifold between # 4 & 5 at about 130 k - who knows how long it was already there? Anyway, I went with the ATS 3-piece, present mileage is 177k - all is well. I doubt that I'll ever have another problem with the manifold.

You can get another stock one, but why throw away money for a bit more you'll do it once and never have to worry again. Suggestion, before installing apply a good quality (such as Eastwood) exhaust manifold paint to fight the rust monster. . .

I agree that the aftermarket manifolds are better. However, where are you guys buying them? I got a new "stock" manifold for a '99 for $170 from Cummins South. I saw BD and ATS manifolds for around $400 on the internet.

I went with the BD which is basically identical to the ATS except that it is pre-assembled. I did find it interesting that it was tapped for a 1/8" NPT Pyro fitting. My Edge pyro was a 1/4" NPT fitting with a @1/4" probe diameter. Now I just need to figure out a new fitting. By the way, I also noticed a substantial increase in cool-down time with the BD exhaust manifold. Thanks again for all the input!!!!!:-laf
