I'm going to do a little surgery on my cat. I've never done any exhaust R&R before. What all do I need to pull this off. Any special tools? I'm looking for any any useful tips/tricks/tools, etc.

TIA ya'll...

You'll definitly need a mig welder and I always end up using a blue tip saw for something. Don't figure on saving much, by the time you get joints pulled apart they're usually wasted. Muffler shop guys slit the joints with an air chistle to get them apart, that works... sometimes.

Awwww! That's not what I wanted to hear. I thought I'd be able to pull enough of it apart to get to the cat, do a little surgery on it, and then reassemble it. I thought for sure I'd be able to reuse the stock system.

You'll have your best luck cutting it in front and behind the cat, removing the guts then welding it back in... . assuming you want to save it.

Trash the cat. . Take a tubing cutter or saw around the pipe both in front and behind the cat and replace with a new peice of flared end, straight pipe made up at a local muffler shop. Cost you about $20. Sounds great, Runs cooler and should get better milage. After you have done this, consider doing the same to the muffler, but make sure it exits out the back of the truck. Fairly noisy.

If you have access to a oxy-acetylene torch, you can heat the joints where they over lap, wiggle them apart. You heat the area where they slip together red hot half way around and start moving it up and down, then left to right. It will loosen up and you may have to reheat it a time or two.

i was getting ready to do battle with mine and had a thought, drilled a small hole and stuck in a wire to see if it had any guts and it was empty, i would of been annoyed had i fought it off for nothing, plugged the hole with a sheet metal screw
