I just finished installing all new bearings in the rear axle as well as new clutch plates in the limited slip on my 98 with 100,000 miles. I soaked the plates in the oil that came in the rebuild kit for a day. After I got it all back together and it is like I have a solid rear axle. I was told to do several circles in a parking lot to brake in the clutches but all I get is the inside tire spinning. I even Threw 600 pounds in the back and the inside tire still spins. So far I have added 3 bottles of the limited slip additive with no improvement. The fluid is mopar synthetic. Any suggestions? I am getting a little nervous with muncie(Indy) only a week away. Thanks!

The circles you are refering to are, i think supposed to be figure 8's to let the lsd fluid flow through the clutches. I think the additive is only supposed to be 3-4 ozs or it makes the lsd not work, ie only 1 tire spins, not both. That is friction modifier to make the gear lube not so slick so the clutches grab, too much and it makes it stickey to little and it slips, that is the way it was explaned to me. What was your issues that made you tear into the rear diff? Was it a growl when you take off and turn?

Hope this helps and makes sense.

Actually, the friction modifier that you add to an LSD makes it slip more easily. This is to reduce chatter or lack of smoothness in the LSD. Adding too much will NOT cause symptoms that make it stickier-- it will instead make it looser.

That's why the lead poster is in such a dilemma, as the modifier he added that was supposed to help hasn't done anything.

MD500E-- did you alternate the plates and frictions, or did you set it up like the factory setup (i. e. not alternating)?

If you alternated, the diff will be VERY stiff, but should loosen up with some hwy miles.

I'd suggest towing something on the hwy to get the diff warmed up, and this should help with the stiffness.

I pulled it apart because the pinion had up and down as well as some in and out play. I took the limited slip to a guy at the dodge dealer. We looked at the old plates and the friction material was worn to the metal. I am just worried that it may have been reasebbled wrong and it is locked up. It really fells locked solid. I even threw a 600lb four wheeler in the back for more traction. On my home tonight I did figure 8's in a parking lot and it looked like someone was doing burnouts on the pavement. The inside tire left rubber marks the entire way. When I turn tight into a parking spot and put it in nutural the truck rolls back a foot or two because of the spring tension in the axle. Everybody says keep driving it but I am not so sure. I think it may have to come apart. Thanks for your help.
