I need a crash course on the smarty jr for 2004. 5. I got the three catcher settings but whats with the torque and timing defaut throught 4? Is this in conjuction with the catcher settings? Any other info would help. Thanks

Don'

t have papers in hand... using blackberry...

You

can choose 1 ,2, or 3 . for main setting. If you don't change torque man or timing they will

Revert to default... . good place to start.

If you need to de tune from default you

Can select from 4 settings on each.

Eg : I set torque man to 3 ( slightly less agrssive

Than default / slightly more than stock)

Should be easier on clutch. .

Left timing on default... runs nice, no excessive smoke.

Tried perf tune at 99 backed off to 65... aprox same as stock

Power.

Ended up running tow setting @99POD

Egt cooler... much less peddle... . will see about mpg.

On 04 6spd Drw 4x4... . HO engine.

Stock 55-75mph=7sec=5th gear

Stock 60-85=16sec=6th gear

As set above tq 3 tm def. On perf or tow setting. .

Tow sett only 1 second slower than perf setting.

55-75=6 second. 5th

60-85=9 second. 6th.

Engi

ne runs smoother ... more willing to rev at light peddle.

Will post some mpg in a week or so.

Steve

Default is same as 2 on tm or tq. IIRC.

Default is most tm and most tq.

3 is next lower then 4. 1 is stock... don't have papers

With me.

Just to be clear, are you guys talking about Smarty or SMARTY JR. ??

Didn't realize that the JR. had anything but preset programs:

0= Stock 1= economy 2=towing 3=performance

JR. does have POD settings now from what I understand, but is that what you guys are talking about?

Dave04,

Thanks for starting this thread. I am in the "darkness" on the Smarty Jr as you are on my 04. 5.

I have mine on 1 and 75% power and that increased my mpg by 1. 5. I need much more info though.

Jr has stock,1,2,3.

The 3 settings can be tuned for tm and tq management

Default is same as it was before POD was available.

Default for tm or tq can be detuned in increments

To fine tune your engine to suit your requirements.

No problem. Thanks Morris for all the info. I just got a older smarty jr without POD i will be getting a pod smarty sometime soon

confused POD

Bob,

I am a little confused. If I install the Power on Demand upgrade will I still have the REVO options or are they incorporated into 100 settings 00-99?

Well... ... ..... went for a little drive over the last week or so on a camping/biking holiday to NH>

Towing a 30' TT (almost straight up front. . 10') weighing approx. 8000lbs.

Carrying approx 1000lbs(Concours, ramps, etc) in the bed.

Smarty Jr on towing setting, 100 POD.

Weather was crappy on way down 270miles of 60% 2 lane, high winds and rain. Ran 60 on 2lane and 65 on 4lane. Some pretty good grades that required occasionaly downshift to 5th. Truck ran beautifully, with NO issues Except 10mpgUS. (hand Calc)... Was a little dissapointed.

EGT are very good (max 1100) and cool down very quick. NO smoke.

One trip of approx 300 miles from CampGround in NH returned 18mpg with varied roads but 60mph tops... . Jr still on #2.

Return trip of 300 miles on more 2lane with lengthy climbs/decents on very rough roads. No CC here!!. A couple hills required 4gear up and down to control decent speeds. . Mileage 12mpg... Seemed to work much harder but got better mileage..... although speeds were 45-55mpg.

Learned that I can beat cruise control mileage by approx 1. 5mpg on future trips I think.

Overall happy with performance(first trip towing for me with this truck)Smarty EGT control proves anyone could drive without worry of high temping.

Still expected to run 12-14 towing but realize conditions far from optimum. Know my sons old 12V with 520K on it would do this or better from his towing experiences.

Regret not running a trip stock w/o smarty first... . no real comparison... . Am thinking Smarty did not hurt mileage... but did not help either... well worth the worry free EGT fueling map.

This truck will run 18-19avg with 22hwy @ 55max. in stock form.

Have now set smarty to #1 for a couple of unloaded tanks. Will then try same on #3 for a comparison.

Don't really see point of running POD lower than 100 if driven with light foot for mileage??

Hope my experiences help some of you guys still sitting on the fence... ... .

IN my exp so far the return from strictly mileage improvement will be a very long time coming BUT the smooth clean performance improvement does not hurt mileage either... ...

Will update in a few weeks

Steve

one question???

When towing at 60mph approx 1800IIRC in 6 at 8-900EGT or 5th @ approx 2300 EGT 6-700EGT . Which scenario will produce best mpg???

EGT tells me 5th is better but lower rpm without lugging should be better ?? with diesel.

I have the original Smarty Jr. It's set on #1. I bought it to gain fuel economy -- it certainly does that. I'm tired of manual smoke control. It doesn't smoke badly, but it is embarrassing. My question is simple:

Do I go to PoD to solve this?

If so, do I set truck back to stock, then upgrade the Jr. , then re-flash to some setting?

I have the G56 with the DMF in a later model '05 that has the metal inter-cooler end caps. I don't want to smoke my clutch. What would be the best settings for fuel mileage driven gently MOST of the time with MINIMAL smoke?

I have a 11k# fiver that I pull. Would I want different settings for when I'm going to pull?

I'm empty most of the time. I do a lot of highway miles [empty], but I want to not smoke at stop lights when I'm not spooled no matter how hard I launch; and also don't want to be smoking while I'm pulling.

Will I be taking a fuel mileage hit to get my smoke minimized?

I know this is a long question with multiple parts. I personally think we need a document with generalizations for starting points. Suggested chapters might be 1. Fuel Mileage Improvement; 2. Power Improvement; 3. Saving your transmission; 4. Minimize the smoke; 5. Upgrading the truck's firmware; 6. Upgrading the Smarty Jr. 's firmware; 7. Miscellaneous Generalizations [such as exhaust temp. etc. ]

I believe that there are quite a number of us that need some help. I need a *cookbook*. Does anyone think a cookbook would be valuable, or am I just blowing smoke?

Thanks for listening to my ramble. MRFost.

I agree that a "cookbook" is what we owners of Smarty Jr's need. I still don't understand exactly what setting I need, and haven't downloaded the free Power On Demand update for fear that I'll totally screw up my settings. Bob, Marco... there've been NUMEROUS posts with people who don't understand the settings. Can we please get something the average guy can understand?
