is this rite

the guy in sears tire store had me all messed up

the 99 2500 4x4 stock will take a 285/75/16

looked it up on his computer and told me the truck takes 245/75/16

that the 285 will not fit the tire is to big for the stock rims plus they will rub bad

this kid is 18 or 19 from the looks of him

so I put it off to find out what is the truth

I thank the 285 BFG MT tires will fit

i'd like to go wieder if I can

285 is the tire tread width in millimeters, 75 is the aspect ratio of the tire( the height of the side wall as a percentage) ie 75% of 285, and the 16 is the rim size.

Most of your meglamart type places have people that don't really know that much about vehicles, and if the computer says so then it must be, the computer is king after all.

As to wether the 285/75/16 will fit or not, I don't know for a fact but I do know that my dad's '01 has 265/75/16's on it, and that is the size of tire that came on it new. Looks like there is plenty of room for another 20 millimeters of width, and another 30 millimeters of height. About 3/4" wider, and about an inch taller. A 285/75/16 would be about an inch and a half wider, and about two and a half inches taller than a 245/75/16 tire.

Hope that helps

Cam

285/75 wont rub.

Sears and such are under orders in many cases to not sell anything but what the truck came with due to liability reasons.

285/75 are 33" tall by ~11" wide.

I have 33x12. 5 on 16x8" rims and rub just a tiny little bit at full turn on the mud flap (and a bit more when compressed and full turn, I do use it off road and towing and hauling off road).

If the mud flap wasn't there I wouldn't rub at all.

285/75/16 tires are spec'ed to fit on a 7. 5"-9" width rim (according to BFG).

245/75/16 , 6. 5 - 7. 5 width rim spec'ed.

I would want to run 8" rims if it were me.

My 99 came with 6" (6. 5"?)rims.

285 is the tire width, 75 is the aspect ratio of tire sidewall of the width.

245 are narrower, about only 9" wide. So they fit nice on a 6" rim.

How tucked in do yours look now? Figure now another inch of sidewall sticking out on each side with the 285.

245/75 is ~ 30" tall / 9 wide

265/70 are ~ 30" tall / 10 wide

(absolute sizes are really based on each manufacturer, some are a little bigger or smaller than others)

What will happen is the sidewall will looked tucked in.

At worst case you'll wear on a top crown of the tread since if the side walls are tucked in too much, the center of the tire kinda pops up a bit.

I've seen the 285/75 on the stock rims, didn't look too bad, but more tucked in then I would like and at low pressures I would worry about loosing a bead. The more you pull in the beads from the sidewall, the more the bead starts to ride at an angle, like it's ready to pull of it's seat. . at the extreme. I like to run the not more than a 4" difference or the minimum rim width to protected the rim. The 12. 5 have a minimum of 8" rim width.

Ok 285 is what it will be on the stock crome rims

I called the other sears they told me they would put whatever tires would fit the rims

thanks

Bigger Tires for my CTD

Shopping for tires, too. I have a '94 Ram 2500CTD 2WD. It has Pirelli Norseman T245/75R16 s on it now. They guy at Costco wouldn't go bigger. The guy at Discount Tire told me I could go to a 265, but would need bigger rims for larger.

There's a nice looking 2002 for sale around the corner from me. Indeed it is jacked up some compared to mine, but he has LT315/75R16 s on his. Same size rim as mine.

I'm looking at some type of body lift (and not having much luck - the ones for a '94 all say "does not fit diesel trucks") before getting tires. Looks like I could do a leveling kit with spring spacers to give me more room on the front.

Any advice?+-

I had the same problem with a Costco trying to get tires for my jeep. . only what was on the door jam, another guy another day, only what was in the computer.

A different Costco, did since it wasnt' too much bigger.

It seems there's a how liability scare going on.

I got my CTDRam tires from National Tire and Wheel via frieght. . on new rims mounted and balanced and ready to go. I'd do it again. Price was great and they arrived in fine condition.

Is the 94 still a 2nd gen? (sorry , don't remember what year the 2nd gen started. thought it was 94)

The 2002 has a different offset and a wider stock rim = 8".

The 315/75 are ~ 34 x 12. 5 tires.

You'll need about 1. 5 - 2 inches more to fit them.

And they will rub at compression.

A body lift is a bad idea. . lots of issues with torsional distortion and such through the frame and body and it's not as easy as you think - nor complete. Stick with a suspension. Spacers in the front aren't a good idea either, best off with a coil spring.

If the 94 is still a 2nd gen, you should be able to get 305 on there without much of a problem. 305 are like 33x12.

If you run 285's on the 6. 5" wheel, you will need to be more mindful of what tire pressures you run. I believe the minimum size wheel to run a 285 is 8". I worked at a Sears in the auto section when I was stationed up in South Dakota, and sold oversized tires to people, but I wouldn't sell them something that was obviously going to rub.

I have 2500slt 4x4 the 285 will help that 410 gear

the spair rim looks smaller some how the rims that ore on the truck are the crome stock rim

I used a Sam's CLub for my 285's. THey wouldn't install the tires if the wheels were on the truck. I had to bring them the wheels only! I probably will never use them again as they did a terrible job balancing the tires.

After several attempts, I took the wheels to an independent tire dealer and he got them balanced perfectly.

I had Pro Comp 305 70 R16s MTs (that's 33's) on my stock 6 1/2 in rims and they never rubbed, on or off road. I went to a wider rim when I bought some 315 75 R17 MT Baja Claws (that's 35's), and they rub when I turn tight and hit a bump at the same time. But as for the 33's, they wore evenly and lasted about 30-35k mi. So i'd say put on the 285's. I know BFG makes a 295 in All terrain, but not sure about MTs.

'97 2500 SLT 4x4 ext. cab / #8 plate / straight piped / 35" MT Baja Claws / 247,000 mi

I have the 285 75 16 tires on my stock '02 and the look very "correct" on it. They never rub and ride good.

The 315s on my H2 rims rub at full lock.

Help me out here.

The stock 02 comes with 7 inch or 7. 5 inch rims?

Do the 285 75 16 tires would prefer an 8 to 10 inch rim?

I was planning on running the Toya 285's next go round. The tire dealer said that they would be fine on the stock rims.

Jim

I wanted 295s, they are a little hard to find.

Look at my gallery. It doesn't look like the sidewalls are bulging.

The smaller sizes look like roller skate wheels.

Watch your pressures and the "print". Rotate regularly!!!

I am getting ready to replace my stock tires on my 94 with Toyo m55, 285-75-16 load range E . An 8in. rim is the ideal size according to Toyo's chart (7. 5-8. 0-8. 5) My stock tire is a 245-75 -16 , stock rim is 16 x 6. 5 , so I am also buying 8. 0 rims This tire / rim combo will not rub.

Doug

look at the BFG MT MUD TIRE thats a truck tire

thats not a tire you would see on a paper pushers car

but a real tire just the same

Have you seen the M55 MT's ? There a more aggresive tread than the BFG's and IMO are a better built tire. They do cost a bit more though.

I have 305/70/16 Pro Comps on stock rims. Tried 315's but they would rub :{ No sidewall problems and they fill up that big wheel well just right :D

Thanks for all your input on this! Man, I had no idea how much thinking I would be doing on buying tires. I just want a bit higher feel - and realize I can't get wild like some of the newer trucks I see.

Love just havin' the diesel. I get waves from people I don't know - just because we both have a Cummins!! -- Feel like I've joined a club having a Cummins!
