What happened?

I use the automatic update feature from Windows - however I don't have the SP-1 Last December I had to restore my system, and when I look at the installation history - it indicates that Service Pack 1 - IS IN PROGRESS! That's over 6 weeks - how can I kill this in progress and get the real thing downloaded?

I can't seem to download the Windows XP Service Pack One. When I try to us the Windows Update Page I get an Error Message stating that "Windows has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page" Thus the reason for this email.

It might be a pain - but can you reload XP and start the "upgrade" bit over gain? I've had to do that with older OS versions - but of course you stand to lose all other upgrades you have successfully made...

For the last week I have been installing and moving into this new "kickass" state-of-the-art PC - it is running the latest version of XP Home Edition (perhaps it's one weakness!) - and after finally getting it all set up. I checked in at Microsoft to see what updates were available/recommended - there were *18* security updates totalling over 18 mb of data - and *14* program updates, totalling over 16 mb of data - and THAT was on the LATEST release of XP!

It took me 6 hours at 26. 4 kb dialup speed to download and install that stuff!

I don't use Windoze, thank goodness for Linux, but can't you use the Restore function? I think you can go back in time to a "saved" picture of your system prior to the problem date. Of course you would lose any additions or updates made since then. Might be much easier than reloading your whole OS again. Check in the Help function of Windows for Restore.

Believe it or Not I foundt the answer:

Over at the Windows Help Page on XP - I found this AND THAT was the problem...

encountered an error and cannot supply the requested page; Cannot Display Page (Windows XP)

Problem Description:

This may occur if Service Pack 1 has been removed from the computer either through System

Restore or by reinstalling Windows XP into the same directory. You may see a page that states that the Web page has an unexpected error or cannot display the page that was requested.

Resolutions:

The value for the CSDVersion in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows

needs to be changed to 0. If you are comfortable editing the registry, follow the instructions below.

1. Click "Start," and then click "Run. "

2. In the Open box type regedit and click "OK. "

3. Browse in the left frame to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows

4. In the right frame you will see the key CSDVersion. Double click this key.

5. Change the value to 0 and click "OK. "

6. Restart the computer.
