After 1400 mile trip to Florida, after driving at highway speeds for 3-4 hours and stopping for fuel, when taking off in 1st or 2nd gear, the read-end chatters (feels like old fashioned wheel hop). Does not occur when cold but rear-end sounds more growly-howly. I have checked the fluid level and it is approximatley 1/2" below the fill hole, but when the plug is pulled the end of plug is covered with black sludgy stuff. Has anyone ever had this problem or heard of this problem? It only happens when it is hot. Replies are appreciated since I must drive back the same 1400 miles.

Thanks!

I would change out the gear oil in the rear end before you go if you can. Use a 80W-140 weight synthetic. I used Royal Purple in mine and no problems on mine at all. If that doesn't help, check the u-joints when you get a chance.

Can dirty rear end lube have this effect even after only 14,000 miles? If so, what causes the chatter? The anti-spin mechanism?

Thanks!

Sorry to ask but I have to do this by long distance telephone since I have no computer where I am at. How may quarts of oil does with rear end hold?

Thanks!

I would guess you have the AAM 11. 5 Axle, and if so it would take a 75W-90 GL-5 Rated gear lube. It holds 7. 6 PINTS or about 4 Quarts. If it is the 10. 5 AAM axle it would take the same stuff, but capacity is only 4. 4 PINTs.
