I posted a list of questions in the wrong spot of 1st gen. section of site post#48? What I have is a 1990 W250 non intercooled, regular cab, auto trans,8ft. plow, 4. 10 gears I assume since top speed is 75, air cond, etc. My questions are as follows...

1- What is the proper procedure for fuel filter changes?

2- My engine now "pulsates" at idle or very light throttle settings. As if you were gently applying and releasing the accelerator. Any ideas why?

3- Brakes. They are miserable and I have been told by owner #2 (I am #3) that they have been like this since new. Very hard pedal, long stopping distances and a slight wander left &/or right when almost stopped along with occasional wobble. I have had this truck for 4 years and over 40000 miles. The brakes have never improved despite new rotors, calipers, xtreme duty pads, brake hoses, new wheel cylinders, shoes and axle seals along with constant adjustments. Tonight while moving it 40 ft. I touch the pedal and damn near went into the windshield but 2nd stab was hard as usual. This sudden grabbyness has NEVER happened before. My question is do any of your brakes work this poorly. It is useless to try to stop short with this truck without my trailer attached and the trailer brakes cranked way up.

4- Coolant Temp. Always very cold in winter and summer 80 degrees+ is in the upper 3rd of the OEM guage and the engine is a dog. I use a quilted grill bra in the winter. The only way to get heat in the winter is to keep the plow blade all the way up and run down the highway for 10 miles at 70+mph. Anyone else had this problem? Solutions???

5- This engine is prone to KDP correct?

6- Any suggestions for a real good technician in New Hampshire or Mass?

If anyone can help out with some suggestions I would really appreciate it. I use this truck to haul BMW motorcycles all over New England and will be using a trailer that will carry 3 portly 600 to 800 pound Bikes at a time this spring. It will also be snowing here any day now and this truck is also used to push that miserable white stuff around. Thank You in advance for any help offered. Chris Harris

I'm not sure what you mean by post #48. I found a post by you in the "Best tip for New 1st Gen owners/Guys willing to help Threads Merged... " that had this same basic info in it. I can split that post out of that thread if you want. I've moved this thread to the 1st gen forum from the website forum because that's where your going to get the best answers on your 90.

Fuel filter change... . Remove the electrical connector at the bottom of the filter, remove filter, R&R the water drain/sensor to the new filter, luibe the seal, and install the new filter. open the bleed screw on the filter housing and use the prime lever on the lift pump to fil the filter. Close the bleed screw and fire up. If you are free saturday check this out https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=140683 I'll be there to help you.

Brakes... try a new master cylinder, then make sure you have vacuum at the two diaphram pumps and the booster. Then go thru the bleeding proceedure. The brakes should stop the truck good. Other than the manufactured vacuum via the pumps, the brakes should be similar to any other vehicle.

Coolant temp... . You have an older "top tank" radiator that is not as efficient at the crossflow style, but it should cool the engine in the summer. I would suggest an old fashion flush and fill, then get a new thermostat. My gage stays on the mark about 1/3 the way from cold, and I get awsum heat out of it. Needle barely moves once the thermostat opens.

The engine being a DOG is another problem, and I can probably help you fix that on saturday as well ;)

I can't address the pulsating engine question

Yes we can have KDP issues.

For a technician try www.massdiesel.com

Hope this helps.

Thanks for everyones help. I will have to wait until next week to work on it and I will post my results. I'm having a hard time imagining heat and BRAKES!!! The way it is right now, with absolutely NO exaggeration I can, at any speed, press, stomp or stand on the pedal with both feet, legs locked, and they will not lock up. As I stated in my cry for help owner #2 said they were always this way from new which I can't believe. I'll let you know ASAP. Thanks again, Chris

Hello all! New guy jumping in with a similar brake situation. I have an 89' D250, 727 auto, the brakes are exactly as you describe. I put a vacuum gauge on it this afternoon hoping to find a bad hose or booster, no luck. I get 6hg, a little more revving it up. It sounds as if you are facing the same situation. I have been advised to find a newer style (rebuildable) pump with an oil feed line and swap it out. Are the 1989 vacuum pumps really not rebuildable?

Concur on a low vacuum issue. I think, not positive, but I think the vacuum pump is supposed to make in the 20 hg range. My rig was the same way, but I never got a chance to test the vacuum. I think the vacuum issue may be a 1st gen ailment, and I have heard of an electric vacuum pump incorporated into the system that works miracles. Not sure where but I read about it a long while ago. Anyone??

- Max

89 FSM states a min. of 8. 5 Hg. a max of 25 Hg. It also show that the diaphram assy can be replaced... You may want to check with the dealer & see if they are still available.

Thanks. If any of you are going to CT Saturday, I'll see you there. Jay, I will have thermostat, coolant, huge drain pan and fuel can to store waste and tarp to collect any spills. Also getting fuel filter @ dealer tomorrow (NO one up here has Fleet Guard x dealer). I have vac testing equipment, etc. You know the truck so I should be easy to find. If not look for the guy with the 2 Liter mug full of orange liquid!

When you guys check vaccume be shure that you isslate the pump. You could be losing it in a hose or a divice someware namly the vaccume pump. I have chased this problem on several first gens and every one was the booster. The last one I bought was 120 dollers at fleetpride and they are a national commpany. If your antilock and brake light is not on check the bolbs. The booster is going on my 93 when I step on the brakes in 10 seconds the lights come on until I let go. The booster is gone in my 90 hard to push pedal hard to stop truck. It is 5 speed so it is not that bad. I bet the stat is bad to. All my 1st gens required lots of brake adj. I bet you have a 355 gear at 75 mph at 2500.
