HELP!!! I'm stuck at the entrance to the West 29th junkyard in Pueblo.

MY truck red lines in RPMs when I start her up and I don't know why.

:( It sounds like you may be experiencing an injector pump problem that was a subject of recall some time ago. There was a potential failure of some checkvalve or spring or something allowing for WOT condition. You will have to have the truck "hooked" to a Chrysler dealer and get them to check your VIN # to see if it is part of that recall. From the sound of it, you are affected. Some 93's did not need recall.

Sorry to hear of your breakdown!

FUBAR pump

Ok, since my wife didn't post clearly enough, here's the rest of the story.

Driving down I-25 to Pueblo I went to downshift and the RPMs went to 3500 when I hit the clutch. I immediately shut the key off and coasted to the shoulder of the off ramp. When I attempted to restart, RPM's went through the roof again... linkage is working normally and all external hardware looks fine. Here comes the big problem, the truck is on the side of the highway with my trailer attached. Is there anyone on the Colorado Front Range with a gooseneck equipped dually that would be willing to help me out by hauling the trailer back to Co Springs?

BTW, the pump was rebuilt by a Bosch rebuilder in Denver exactly two months ago this week.

Thanks,

Joe H

Crash, sorry to hear about your problem. I would offer to help, but I only have a 250 and no 5th wheel or goose neck setup. If worse comes to worse, try calling a towing company like Randy's (Road One. ) They have wreckers that range in size from F350's/Ram 3500's to HUGE flatbeds for moving large earth movers to wreckers to tow fully loaded over the road trucks. Their # is 596-6067, thier address is 5608 E Pike's Peak (access from Platte or Airport, but not Powers. I deal with them frequently at work and they are very good people, and very professional. (note: Colo Spgs. Police Dept. uses them a lot).

When you find out what the problem was, let us know. And just curious: what place in Denver was your pump rebuilt? Well, good luck.

The Saga Continues

Well, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that truck and trailer are home. The bad news is that the Getrash decided that it wanted to die. The rear main bearing on the transmission siezed and caught on fire.

So now I'm in need of a transmission in addition to the repair on the injection pump. *sigh*

Many thanks go out to Fuzz and Sean for assisting with the recovery operation.

Sorry to hear about your bad luck!

How many miles were on the Getrag? Is your truck modified? Did you ever change oil in it? The R. P. M. change sounds like a pump problem, maybe the governor or a internal part. Is your pump rebuild under warranty? Hopes this helps you.

Well after talking to Power Wagon last night, I found that you cannot flat tow ANY manual equipped Ram because the oiling system in the transmission is dependant on the input shaft turning. So the Getrag dying is my fault for not disconnecting the driveshaft.

 well, what is the correct way to tow these trucks if the need ever occurs? I sure don't want my transmission to blow up by towing it the wrong way. Did you get the pump fixed yet? Was the problem due to the rebuild of the pump? Thanks for the information

4X4's

If you have 4x4 with hubs (all real 4x's have hubs) you can unlock the hubs and a tow truck can tow you backwards with the rear wheels of the truck off the ground.

Just another method, keeps from having to pull the driveshafts, also if flat towing you can unlock hubs and you only need to remove rear driveshaft.

Hopefully no one reading this will need to have their truck towed!

Correct way to tow

Actually, you 4x4 guys have it easy. Put the T-case in neutral and flat tow since the NP cases have a pump on the rear output shaft so as long as the rear shaft is turning, the case is being oiled.

For the 2wd folks, removing the rear driveshaft will enable you to tow it.

Yes, a $3500 transmission replacement in the middle of a move is not going to be easy to swallow.

Hey Crash_ AF. What are you going to do about the transmission delimma? Are you going to get the Getrag replaced or rebuilt? Just wonerring. Have you ever had trouble withe that particular transmission before? What was your redline problem? Did it get fixed? Hope you are having better luck now!

Crash_AF, sorry to hear about your problems, especially the transmission. Thanks for sharing your experience. I must say I certainly learned something from this post - I hadn't even thought about ever having to have my truck towed.

The only problem I had with the transmission prior to my mistake was it occasionally jumped out of 4th gear. Other than that, it was working fine.

No, I haven't gotten the truck up to Denver to have the pump replaced yet, I'm debating on whether or not to remove the pump myself or drag the whole truck up there.

The Getrash!

Just might be time for an NV4500 swap! You might want to look into this now that you have to take the Getrash out anyway. Check here http://www.standardtransmission.com/ for the needed parts to make the swap. Talk to Mike. I purchased some parts from them a couple of months ago and was satisfied both with the quality and service I received.

Ummmm, correct me if I am wrong here fellas. Could you not tow the truck without disconnecting driveshafts if you place the T-case in neutral and left the transmission in gear or park? (on a 4x4 of course) This would allow only the drivetrain from the axle to the T-case spin, and not the transmission right? If this is true there should be no problem as the T-case is a self oiler. Just asking because my Jeep recommends to flat tow with "T-case in neutral and transmission in gear or park"

More options... .

Eric O.

You are correct.

You are right, if you have a 4x4 you can put the T-case into neutral and avoid all of those nasty things that happened to me, but I have a 4x2 so I had to disconnect the driveshaft rather than running it in neutral. Of course I found this out after I blew the transmission up... :(
