Moved to 911 cause I need help! Anyone???

I just got my 6-speed in last night and it's got problems. It was one I got that was lightly used as a Dodge test trany. It looked like it had very few miles on it and not much rust on the case. It's an '02 version as far as I can tell. Anyway compared to the other two I got, the input shaft seemed quite loose and would even hit on the housing around it. The other two would not do this. So I went ahead and added some shims to tighten up the main shaft a bit. Well now when I drove it for the first time it seems to be binding (shudders) in all gears except direct (5th). The more load I put on it the worse it is. It is the worst in 2nd and 3rd I think. Is there anyone here who can tell me if this might be caused by the main shaft being too tight or might I have another problem? I also added . 003 to the counter shaft, which left it with a tiny amount of end play. I am guessing on all this because I don't have all the attachments to hook up a dial indicator and plus I would have to pull the rear housing off to check it. The specs call for . 002-. 006 end play on both shafts. I'm FREAKING out here and hope I have not killed something already in my 20 miles of testing. I wish I had the money to just have an expert set it up and make sure all is well. Oh it shifts great!! This is what I was worried about and now that is fine and I have something else going on. There has to be a trany expert on here so if you see this please speak up!!

Edit: As I think back on this thing before I did anything to it, it was harder to turn then the other two. If I held the output shaft when in neutral it was even stiffer, which is normal to some extent but seemed almost excesive. I figured that since it was so new that maybe it was just not as broke in as the others and that may still be the case. Help!

Thanks,

Mark

When you did your end play adjustment, did you mess around with the shift forks? If you did not remove the tailshaft, you can't check the end play properly. Do you know if the trans was ever apart? If so, they can be a real bear to put back together.

It does not look like it has ever been apart. I did not take the tail housing off so I was unable to check it the right way. I am probably shooting myself in the foot with my guess work. I am probably going to just have to take it to someone who knows what they are doing and has the proper tools and hope it doesn't end up costing like a new one would have. Here is something else I feel stupid to admit. Since I am clueless on the NV5600 I started out trying to pull the bell housing off the main case in order to free up the input shaft bearing race. Loctite had seeped in around it (from sealing of the front cover) so it was stuck making end play adjustments hard. I was able to separate it only about . 5 inch or less and soon saw that it did not come off. Could I have screwed something up in doing this I wonder?

I have only been into one and that was at school. It has been about a year and a half, so is not real fresh in my mind. However I do recall that there were several things that were very important, one being the shift forks. If you are not paying attention, the photo in the service manual is not that clear.

As far as trying to separate the clutch housing from the gear housing, the proper way is to lift the gear housing from the clutch housing, then remove the gear train from the clutch housing. It is possible something has slipped then you attempted to pull it apart. There are many special tools required, and you also need an engine lift to get it apart. You might be wise to have a trans shop look at it if you don't have the shop manual and the tools.

Well this morning I took an hour and dropped the trany back out. The oil with only about 20 miles on it was already full of very fine brass. No chunks but just a really brassy sheen to the oil. The input shaft just doesn't really feel too tight to me. It has pretty good side to side movement. At this point I am just going to stop messing around and try to find some place to have it worked on I guess. I don't have the tools, book and know-how to do it.

Thanks anyway for the reply. I'm really bummed as this was supposed to be a good transmission and now everything is going bad on me.

Moab to Ft. Worth could be done in about 18 hours (1000 miles). Set it up with Standard Transmission, they could do it in a day I think, then back home. Fuel and motels might be cheaper than shipping and they are among the best in the business.
