Hello,

I have read about success using various spray on products applied to the oil pan for noise reduction. I was wondering if anyone has used a product such as Herculiner on their oil pan for noise reduction? I am interested in using Herculiner because it can be brushed on and would be an easy and inexpensive application.

Any comments appreciated.

Thanks,

Scott

I tried something like that back in April. Had a engine out, coated the pan with a (mix two part liquids) synthetic rubber. Coating was almost 1/2" thick. To my suprise it made very little difference. I knew the results were gonna be suspect when I tapped it with a wrench and the pan still made a ringing sound. I had expected dull thud.

steved, while increased heat could be a concern, these engines run in tight enclousers all the time powering gensets, heavy equiptment and pumps at full duty cycle loads with no heat issues. I don't see how our light duty use could ever be a problem even if we totally insulated the block. As long as the cooling system was up to par that is.

I was just stating my concern... a tight enclosure is still allowing the engine to "vent" heat... insulating the pan holds the heat to the engine...

While it might seem trivial, that with other "mods" can add up.

I coated my oil pan with Quitcoat, a visco-elastic sound insulator, that looks and applies like Herculiner. It made a very slight improvement in resonant noise. The only place I could tell is where I park at home on a concrete driveway next to a block wall at idle.

Noise through the valve cover is far more significant than noise through the pan. The pan is normally filled with oil, which is not a great sound conductor anyway. That said, every little bit helps. I did not notice any change in engine temps after coating the pan.

Have you ever heard how loud the P7100 fuel injection pump is? On a test stand, it is VERY loud. Nearly as loud as the engine itself.

For me the noise is half the fun of owning a diesel... How much noise reduction could putting rubber coating on your oil pan really reduse??? I'd save your time and money and just enjoy your truck. Wanna do something good? Get a Fliud dampner or some electric fans... .

Yep! Just throw a floor mat over the pump while its running and see how quiet it gets... ( careful of the fan though!)
