I have owned this truck for 8 years. Was thinking about a replacement (another brand),. Thought I would look into this website. Well... . It looks as though I will keep this one and BOMB it some... . Now... For the question, what is recommended first? Guages, which ones? What else. You should know I do like to tinker, just don't know what to tinker with. . Thanks... Lee:D

guages

Welcome Lee, The first thing to do is guages! Mine are a mismatch of guages that work for me. The Tach comes from Isspro and plugs into the wirining harness under the dash. I have a three pod mount on the dash for the boost, oil, and water temp. I got the guages from Baxters Auto Parts in Portland, you may have them in WA. After that the biggest help is the 16cm turbine housing and turning up the pump modertly. Also on these trucks the tail pipe is darned near crushed where it goes over the rear axle, this needs to be fixed. I run straight exhaust with a mandrel bent pipe around the transfer case. Air in Air out!!!!!!!!!!!

For the most power, I went with the POD injectors, but be aware, they produce heat as they flow more fuel, but the power is there to pull if needed. I haven't timed the engine yet, but will soon. I got chastised for this, but on my mechanical oil pressure guage, I ran a length of grease hose 1\8 to the firewall and then copper tube up to the guage, you can use plastic though, I just don't like plastic! Hope this helps some. Have a good one! Tim

Welcome Lee! If you are going to do this in stages as the money comes (like me :D ), I would suggest getting the pyrometer first. this is the most important, since major engine meltdown could occur if you turn things up and keep your "foot to the wood" for too long under load. As I think RE Miller calls them "reality meters". :D

I went with Isspro gauges, mostly based on an article in the TDR where several brands were compared, but it's mostly a personal choice.

After 8 years driving it stock, you can easily make your truck feel like a new one performance-wise. Just say NO to other brands! :-laf

Welcome !!!

The guys on this site will all help. I have found that the 1st Gen guys are the best... they will rally round to help with almost anything until it gets solved. .

As JFitzgerald mentioned put in your Pyro (EGT) gauge first, then boost, (transmission temp if you run an auto)

Ps: the pyro should be installed PRE-TURBO not post-turbo. It goes in the manifold just ahead of the turbo/manifold connection.

I'm using all Isspro guages except for my boost which is a 2 5/8" Auto-Meter.

Mark everything in it's original/stock location and then keep track of differences as you go... I personally think it's really important and is the only way to have accurate results/comparisons of before/after.

Good luck on your 'Bombing' run and ask anything you need.

Regards, Bob

These are the mainstream guys to talk to. . Welcome!!

I have owned both the Isspro and the Autometer and prefer the Autometers so far. The pyro seems a bit more responsive and actually goes to 0°F when its 0°F out. Again personal preference.

As for mods, the limits are your pocket book. Do your research and ask a few questions before purchasing and you shouldn't go wrong.

The first thing to do is determine what you want to do. Do you want a drag racer or a heavy hauler? This will determine some of the mods you do along the way.

Hope we all can help. .

Welcome Lee,

Glad you stayed with the 1st gen. We need as many as we can around. Accesseries are few and far between but with a little ingunity you can make just about anything happen.

Frits is right Pyro 1st.

Bush you sly dog. :p

Thanks Guys,

These are the kind of responses I was hoping for. Looks like it is EGT first. I am looking to make a heavy hauler and personally do not need to get down the road too fast. It would be fun to walk away from one of THEM, though..... Lee

Hi, Lee! Welcome.

I notice in your signature you're running a 4-speed auto (A518) and a pacbrake.

Since the A518 normal setup in a 92 doesn't have a lock-up torque converter, how does the pacbrake work for you? Or have you done something special with the rig?

Tx,

DBF (similar truck, always looking for info)

DBF,

I have used the Pacbrake for about 3-4 years. I have done nothing to the trans. I am very careful how I use it. First I turn off the OD, if on. Then if need be, slow with the service brakes to aroung 50. At this point I pull the shift lever into 2nd. It slows down very well. Of course you need RPM'S to do the slowing. I am aware that this is not the best way to work but it does work for my needs. I have not gone over any passes or on extremelly long hills, just keep to myself in a safe place. :p

Diesel Freak,

You sound as though you are from around here or you have spent some time here. I don't like it here and will move as soon as I can retire..... I have been to NW BOMBERS. . It is a good site. I have been to many of the diesel sites. Each has something to use. I am trying to become well enough acquainted with the CTD to do some BOMBING of my own... . Working toward a EGT meter first... . Good to see you!... Lee:D
