Injector Pump

A few days ago I posted "600 hp for $400". I know that I will never get quite that high but I am seriously considering letting them do this. What I would like to know is if you do this mod and what are the disadvantages to this as opposed to getting a 215 pump? They told me that the 180 pump can push enough power to just break the engine. So should I save up and just get the 215 pump or have them increase my rack travel in the pump I have? What advantage would the 215 pump have over a recalibrated 180 pump?

You can achieve the same goal with a TST#4 torque plate. The Power Kit sells for $300. The #5 is only a little less strong. Neither is as strong as the 215 pump with the proper torque plate in it.

I guess it's safe to say that boost/EGT gauges would be necessary to keep your eye on that 1100# beast under the hood when mods like this are done.

I want like heck to start modding, but without gauges I don't know my baseline.

This month's mission: gauges

Matt - now, which ones to buy..... ??!!

Hey CA..... Hey man if you want to increase your rack travel just take you #4 plate out man... all that plate does is give your fuel a curve and limit rack travel!! As long as you have guages just take it out and watch the heat YOU WILL HAVE HEAT with that much rack travel... if you have a stock clutch burn it in SLOWLY if it starts to slip let out and get back into it. It will adjust sooner or later, and if it never does... well... time for a new clutch. Don't spend the money to get that done all those guys are gonna do is take the back plate off of you P7100 pump and adjust a screw in the back... and it will not give you that much horse... you stock charger just isn't capable of it!! Do it yourself and just take the plate out... But I WARN YOU WATCH THE HEAT especially at high rpms... . Thanks man. .

I thought that I read somewhere amongst all these threads that removing the plate altogether would damage the pump... . much in the same way that sliding the plate foward from the stock position increases rack travel beyond what it's supposed to be.

Hey I am well aware of the affects of no plate as I had a talk with Piers on this subject. According to Gillett Diesel, as my pump currently sits, at full rack travel (with no plate) it is pumping 180 cc's of fuel per whatever (I forget the rest) and the rack botoms out on something in the pump. They recalibrate it to put in about 400 cc's. Like you said the thing makes a lot of heat with no plate so this mod makes some egt reducing stuff a must. Rich Gillett said that with this done the 180 pump can put enough fuel to break the engine in a heartbeat of he maxes it out. He said that it is because of this that he never puts a 215 pump in anything that doesn't have it already and assured me that it is a waste of time and money seeing as he can do this with the 180 pump. Is he really full of it, or just on to something no one here has tried to do??

180cc's per revolution (I think... ) is a far cry from 400!!

That pump is really turned up.....

The 215 pumps have a lot of better hard parts in them... . but the cam inside the pump is better suited for making power in the 160 pumps once you regrind them for more duration.

The 215 pumps have a lot of stuff already done to them to make them better that have to be done to the 160 pumps when upgrading.

I think there are a few people on this list that are way to intellegent to not know about this. Therefore I'm calling B. S. But by all means don't let me stop you. I'm curious to see the results:D My friend took his truck to a pump shop who claimed spectacular results..... it didn't pan out. Personally, if I were doing this I would want to know in advance what is being done..... none of this, "oh I just make a few adjustments here and there. " Joe has a very good point about not being able to achieve 600hp for $400. Maybe this guy can???? I know that Joe has had to fight and pull teeth to get to the level he is at.

What and where are identifying marks on the pump to indicate which pump I have? It has been changed out in the past during a Cummins power upgrade to 230/605. I would like to put the 370 injectors in now.

Come to the Texas rally and I will show you a disassembled P7100. There is $1 pin that stops the rack if there is no torque plate. When it shears, you destroy $1000 in governor parts. NEVER run without a torque plate. Sickly makes 600 hp and has a torque plate in its P7100, in the stock position (NOT fully forward).

Joe... . hey man I don't mean to make a scene here, I just have a question. I know you know quite a bit about the P7100's but, there are two screws in the back side of that pump. One is the angle of which that dog ear rides on the torque plate and the other is Rack travel adjustment right? Correct me if I'm wrong PLEASE!! So with that in stake running with out the torque plate would not be at FULL rack travel just like 13 or 14mm right? Therefore it wouldn't be hitting the $1. 00 pin you spoke of right? Please correct me if I am wrong, I love to learn all I can, but this is what I have learned so far!! I know run with my plate back in actually a #6 plate in because I have too much fuel not enough charger! Saving my pennies for TWINS.....

OK, I think I understand your question. Yes you can adjust rocker and rack travel vs. torque plate position with a screw that is accessed through the back plate. The part that rubs the torque plate is called the rocker. Regardless of the adjustment, without a torque plate, the linkage itself does not stop the fuel rack. If the AFC link is not rearward enough to stop the rocker and hence the rack before 21 mm travel, the pin will stop the rack. It turns out that there is no need to fool with the screw because it is easier to make a torque plate that does what you want. . . when you get to the point where you can even use the last couple mm of rack travel. Sickly made 510 hp at about 18. 5 mm and less power with more rack travel. That's before some [censored] and [double secret censored] were installed :D

So, who do I have to have whacked so that I can be in this little secret society where I can learn about all this 'top secret' stuff?

I'm not in this game to make a buck, I'm in this for my own personal enjoyment and to help others have a good time with it as well.

Matt

Hey thanks Joe... Like I said before, I've never adjusted those screws... I was warned, but unfortunatley I have run without my plate before, actually for about 40,000 miles, in my early mod days... . Now I have way too much fuel, and not enough air. I savin my pennies soon I will have enough for Twins... hehe. Right now I'm gonna go with Mitchells twin setup I've seen a bunch of them run and wow... they are impressive!!... And you guys wanting to fool with those screws... just save the time of doing handstands underneath your hood trying to get to those screws... pop that pump off take it too a shop and have it put on a stand and recailabrated much like what Pies does if you want more fuel guys there is a ton of different ways to go about it, other than doin that and it is much safer, yeah I took the plate out and loved it... But I was also very lucky not to really mess my pump up, Like Joe was saying earlier

Matt,

I too would like to be allowed in the secret society, but give me one good reason they should let us in.

They've invested thousands upon thousands of hours researching and experimenting to learn the information. They've spent tons of money that they can only recover if they are allowed to sell the knowledge they've gained.

I understand their situation and I'm surprised and thankful that they let out as much information as they do.

A fellow TDR member (cumminsgetme) and I are on a personal quest to fully understand the P7100. We are going about it the hard way. It takes time and money. Bosch books and videos aren't cheap.

Now I have to run regrind my camplate!

I understand your position, but at the same time it's very frustrating to hear these tidbits being thrown out at us and not have anything to substantiate them.

QUAD-TURBO SYSTEM!!! NO lag... . 6000hp guaranteed... . I have them in stock and you can buy them, but it's top secret!

The above sort of thing KILLS a guy like me. I hate seeing headlines and not hearing the details, especially when it comes to my #1 hobby... diesels! Yeah, you read that right... ... hobby. I am not in this forum to make money, nor am I trying to get some info and leave and go make money. I'm trying like heck to learn as much as possible, and to make informed decisions on what's out there.

Sell me the knowledge, I'll buy it!! The only way to make money on an initial investment on R&D is to sell the product/knowledge you have gained, and I respect that. Am I overreacting, yeah. Why am I overreacting? Because this is what I'm passionate about... . for some it's travelling, for other's it's watching sports..... for me it's diesels! I'm only reacting how any other fanatic would if they were faced with a situation such as this.

Information and contacts/friends I have gained on this site is to me what season tickets is to a sports fan.

I guess I'm a bit too enthusiastic for my own good... .

Matt - yet another instance where my foot is in my mouth

Matt,

You're not too enthusiastic for your own good. You're not enthusiastic enough. :)

You should be grinding your own camplates, tweaking governor springs, modifying valvebody pressures and shift timings, and a whole host of other freebies.

I know you have ideas about your truck. Try them out. Make a modification, be honest to yourself about the improvements and the sacrifices made to get those improvements. Then you'll begin to understand the relationships between various parts of your truck and how it functions.

Trust me, you'll learn more experimenting with your truck than you'll ever learn from TDR. I know I have.

It's a shame we don't live closer. You seem to have the same passion that cumminsgetme and I do.

HoleshotHolset,

You've got to understand that the guys who are on top, like Chris said, have spent hours upon hours of R&D. This is what separates the big boys from the little girls:) I hope that some day I will be a big boy:D If these guys released every bit knowledge they had then everyone would be at the same level. I can understand why some people with hold bits of information..... because they have busted their butt learning. I can honestly say that if I were able to produce 700 hp on #2, I wouldn't tell everyone on this list how I did it. I would share information with people I'm close with who share the same ideas. Maybe that's not right... . but that's the way it is. As Chris said, play with your truck..... mark original adjustments... . you can always go back. 90% of what I have learned has been on my own. Chris and I have been making progress and I feel that we learn a lot from each other. I also don't think your too enthusiastic... . this is what separates people who will gain the knowledge and have the hottest truck around vs. people who will let their friends work on the truck and know nothing.

man you guys sound just like me about 2 years ago when I joined this forum. So many gurus.

guys like Joe Donelly, Piers, HVAC, hp gods. I would have never thought for a second I would ever get close to what they were doing. Since then I've learned alot, so have they, I've seen all of them gain another couple of houndred hp:) and have joined the ranks as the self proclaimed fastest 4x4 diesel.

When I joined I was making 328hp(372with lpg,428 with lpg and nos) at the rear tires with all my stock stuff, but "tweaked" as much as I could and using every gasser trick I knew of(drugs). I though that was as good as I'd ever get but I never gave that a chance to happen as I have now climed over 600hp. :) I bought my truck new so its been "used", now has 150k on the odometer that is way low, sees 1800+ daily and is still going strong. Good luck guys, if you ever want my advise feel free to ask for that kind of help is what helped me get were I am.

Adam

I guess I'm not alone in my quest for turbo diesel nirvana.

It is truely a shame that I don't have any folks around here that are complete nutters when it comes to diesels... . like you guys.

That's it!! I'm moving!!

I'm trying like heck to learn... .

My camplate would already be BOMBed if I had me some gauges... . I have a boost gauge on order, but the EGT is the one I really need and can't swing it until my educational expenses subside... . beer gets expensive!

I'd like to do all sorts of stuff to my truck... but until I get the EGT, I'm weary that I'll go to high and burn some parts..... but then I'd know that I'm making power!

Sorry I lashed out like that... . it's just frustrating for a guy like me to hear about all these mods and then not know what they are.

Keep in touch guys... . I got a feeling we will all be making a lot of HP soon if we help each other out!!

Matt - diesel fanatic!
