I have had a problem since my truck was new with switching from hi beam to low in night driving - the low beams - and sometimes the hi beams when switching back - will not light, leaving me in the dark! After frantically switching back and forth a few times, the lights work normally, but oncoming drivers must be VERY puzzled... #ad

I don't drive after dark very much, so it hasn't been a big problem, and if I switch from hi to low beam a few times before I get under way, USUALLY have no further problems - but sometimes forget, or the problem DOES resurface underway.

Anyone else have this problem, and how hard to fix or replace the switch?

I had problems somewhat like this when I added an extra pair of driving lights without a Relay for them. What actually happened was that it started to burn out the actual light switch on the dashboard and NOT the hi-low beam switch on the column. it was pretty easy to change to the new switch BUT there is a little button that you need to push to get the knob off the switch on the dashboard. If you buy a new switch, you will notice this little button. Took about 30 minutes to switch everything over and took care of the problem. Merry Christmas and hope everything works out for you.

I really think *my* problem is in the hi/lo beam switch on the column, but will try playing a bit working the actual light switch to see if it has any effect. I really hate to fiddle with the hi/lo column switch, since that involves pulling the steering wheel with the cruise control wiring, and then swapping out the hi/lo beam switch usually involves some problems in messing with wiring leads running down the culumn as well - really no fun at all, and potential for creating new problems!

Thanks for the reply - I *have* heard of light switch problems when accessory lights, or additional lights on trailers, etc. , are involved - then the relay approach is needed.

Have had same problem with 89, not a diesel. It was in the dimmer switch which is not actually in the steering column but mounted on the left side of the column just below the dash. Mine was too far up toward the actuating lever not allowing it to work right. It is adjustable up and down to give correct stroke on the rod from the actuating lever. Don't dispair if the rod falls out. It can be re-installed with out taking the truck apart. You have to pull the little panel directly under the steering column and the adj. bolts are 5/16". bg

THANKS BG!

That sounds like it MIGHT be the fix!
