HID Conversion questions

I can see quite a few of you have converted to HID lighting. The prices are actually comming into my range, so I am doing some homework.



Questions are... .



All the kits I have found so far do not offer a high beam option. What happens when you click your high beams?



I have found kits from about $350 to $450. Can anybody suggest a reputable dealer with a good price?



Anything else that I should be aware of?

Shawn- First of all, you'll probably need the Sport headlights, which have 4 bulbs. HID bulbs need to stay on continuously, since they have a "ramp up" time, and would probably be best used as low beams. Do a search on HID, you'll find more than I can offer.

PM JoshPeters about his HID conversion. He used BMW headlights. Wicked bright lamps, and has low and high beams.

Are the low/high beams both HID?



I guess it helps that he works on this type of stuff all day long... . he has access to all sorts of neat stuff.

Josh's high and low are HID. The BMW lamps have a shutter.

The High and low beam needed a couple relays to get to work right. Due to Dodge not leaving the low beam on when you go to High beam. I set it up so that there wasn't a back feed either, so the little blue indicator works properly as well. The one downside on mine is... . I had to litterally take the dremmell tool and cut the back side of the headlamp out and screw the prism/shutter assembly into place. There's just enough room for everything to fit. I'm still trying to find a "good" location for one of the ignitor boxes. Dang Cruise servo is in the way... ...

PS. I haven't really needed the high beam. Being the truck sits up so high, I can read road signs at around a mile on low beam. I don't get flashed very often either... I got flashed more when I had the regular bulbs in it.

Did you get the ballasts and the bulbs from a junkyard, or what?

This is a great place to get some HIDs. Hella ballasts are the only way to go. They are oem in most of the high end cars.

I'm using BMW ignitors and control units from cars that got hit just hard enough to break the mounting tangs off the headlamps. The body shop at my work has a few. Take the bulbs, projectors, and units out and retro-fit them into the truck.

Josh- when all is said and done, is this a modification that is so good that we should all be lusting after it? Sounds like you had to do an awful lot of work to put it all together.
