Want to ask some questions regarding the relationship between boost and EGTs

Just picked up some 4s from Don and results are a little different than I expected.

I started bombing with just a Comp and noticed right off the EGTs were up a lot. On 3x5 I could hit 1400 pretty easy. With boost elbow I could pull 28-30psi. Then went to a set of Mach2s and EGTs went even higher. Could hit 1500 on a decent 5th gear pull. 5x5 would hit 1650 in short order. Boost stayed close to the same maybe up a couple points to 30-32 psi

Installed B1-2 and EGT drop was dramatic. on 3x5 EGTs were hard pressed to go over 1100 maybe 1150 on a long pull. Boost went up to maybe 34-35. On 5x5 I could get EGTs up to maybe 1250-1300 and boost around 36. At this point I thought boost seemed low but with EGTs in check it did not seem as though I had a leak.

Just installed the Mach4s and was expecting EGTs to get up in the 1400 range on 3x5 and boost to be up close to 40 or more. Nope! While truck seems to have a more touchy go peddle with the 4s and be more responsive, the EGTs and boost are almost unchanged. I could make it hit 1190 on 3x5 but boost was unchanged maybe even lower. Keep in mind I am running my small 32" studs and not my 35" tires I run in the summer but I figured EGTs would be up and boost at least 40 psi? With 4. 10s it's hard to put a hard pull on it. You romp it at 45mph and in a matter of a few seconds I am topped out at 80mph. I just can't see that I have a boost leak when EGTs are so low. I really thought with Mach4s, Comp, and B1-2, I would see boost on the 40-45 psi and EGTs up around 1400(3x5) I figured I could run water/meth for 5x5 dyno runs or smoking those silly Fodes but at this point I'm starting to wonder if water will be needed.

Anyone have any ideas how one could run Mach4s at 5000' with a Comp and EGTs and boost are laughably low? Don't get me wrong... the truck runs hard and smoke is low if you keep your mind. I'll wait until I get my 35" tired back on and can put a 5th gear pull type good load on it, but at this point I'm wondering if some 5s or 6s are around the corner. I want to fuel until I see EGTs around 14-1450 on 3x5 and 1600+ on 5x5 at which point I can cool it with water. I only hit 5x5 on rare occasions so don't care if I have to water it down on those occasions. Thanks!

BTW Don is a great guy to deal with. Can't recommend his stuff enough.

In rescent months I've been running the 5's w/ a B-1qs up by Ft. Collins. Rolling into it in 5th at 50mph it will peg at 1600 at around 90 or so. I'm ata little lower elevation and have the 3. 54's, it has never had a problem building exaust temps they just cool down a lot faster now with piers' head + cam. All I can think of is the lower gearing may be what's keeping you from building as high of temps

Quick guess is your gauge is wrong. No way you are running M4's at 5000' and not having EGT issues. UNLESS Don has recently made some ENORMOUS changes to his sticks, there ain't no way.

Same setup at 4000' tops 1700*F at about 85 MPH. My old-school M3's and Drag Comp top 1700*F way before that even (drag comp brings lots of heat).

If the gauge isn't wrong, then there is probably a problem w/ the turbo... at 5000' w/ my M3's I easily push 48 PSI boost in 3rd gear, and after shifting to 4th it plays w/ the 50 mark. Down at 1200' I see 52-53 psi.

I'd buy that Josh except I know the thing will run hot cause it did bad with stock 12cm. I'm thinking maybe the short gears are part of it. I know dbooks ran hot with 3. 54s and a drag comp with KS but I think some of it was his was an HO too. I'd love to find another gauge I could try but I just don't think it's that far off... I hope lol

PS hey sledboy check this out from Sat. My buddy James rode with Quinlan and kinda went off :)

All those sled pics on that site are pretty sweet! Makes me want to call in sick and go sledding tomorrow.

Seems to me that if you don't have lots of smoke at wot, you don't have a boost leak. I'd look to the VP at this point. Codes? Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? Lift pump keeping up? Are you sure you weren't sent the wrong injectors by accident? Just some ideas.

FP consistent 14 WFO and 22 at idle. I can make the the thing smoke like a freight train if I romp it with no boost but once boost comes up it cleans up nicely. I guess I would have no idea whether I was sent the wrong injectors other than Don's word. I'll have to put it on the dyno once I get my FE installed and see what it makes. I would think 500-520 would be in the ball park?

No, more like 465-475. Denis dynoed with just his 3. 7's and put down 462... with water/meth he was at 495. 3. 7's to 4. 0's is only ~7 hp.

Luke, I just installed a set of Mach 4's about a month ago on my HO and also live up here at a mile high. With the hot-rod VP44 and TST turned off (HX40 turbo), I was only seeing about 1300-1350 WOT in 6th gear. With the Catcher installed, went up about 100 deg. With the TST turned on, EGT's are insane I am sure - no telling how high they get. I too am extremely supprised at how clean these injectors run. I haven't towed yet, but I don't think I will have any problems towing through the rockies. I am already wishing I would have gone bigger... .

LOL it never ends. It makes me wonder though why people such as you and myself install what most say will be unmanageable and yet they turn out to be easily manageable? I honestly see very little smoke difference with the 4s over the 2s if any. I have turned the box on and off and there is a definite difference so I think my Comp is fueling as it always has. I know my gauge read very hot with stock 12cm so I can't imagine it decided to fail the very day I installed the B1. What is left? FP is great... There are two other possibilities in my humble opinion... either Don's injectors are just that good or somehow there was a mix up and I didn't really receive Mach4s but maybe just some more 2s or 2. 5s or something? I have to take Don's word that they are 4s so what does that leave me with... I'm hoping I can find someone local who will let me borrow a pyro to validate mine is accurate. After that I guess maybe some 5s or 6s will be next. I want to fuel until I see 1450 on 3x5 and who cares what on 5x5, I'll cool it with water/meth then. I'm hoping to meet up with some of you guys later this spring and do some seat of the pants testing.

Did you install the injectors and turbo at different times? If so you should have noticed a difference in performance with the 4's if they are genuine 4's. Since egt's are low, an air restriction isnt likely. With your fuel pressure, shouldnt be a prob there either with filter ect. What about clutch slippage? Is it possible that the clutch is slipping and not putting enough load on the engine, therefore giving the low readings?

Are you suggesting that a stock clutch shouldn't hold with a Comp, B1, and Mach4s??? :) After driving it a couple times it is definitely snappier now. Kinda feels on 3x5 what it felt like on 5x5. Hard to compare apples to apples right now cause I have small tires on it. Once sledding season is over I'll put the 35s back on make a concerted effort to put the stock clutch out to pasture.

I have an FE in the garage just waiting for that day but so far I haven't smoked it. I don't abuse it but it has been amazing the abuse it has withstood with the 2s. I have a feeling with the 4s that it's days are numbered. I was kind of mean to it tonight when someone tried to pass me on the right, from a light. He lost... bad lol. Rather funny watching him jump as I went by and barked the turbo in his window while shifting into 4th lol

I have to be careful to not give it any throttle when grabbing 4th and 5th. :{ Also have to use caution flooring it below 1750 as the torque ( :-laf and smoke :-laf )comes in real strong. :-laf
