I have a 98. 5 dually with 4x4 with 135k auto. The problem i am having is with the dimmer control for the headlights. They will not go off high beams. I have replaced the multi function wiper, dimmer, turnsignal switch, thinking that it controls the lights but i have not been able to fix the problem..... Is there a relay somewhere that i can be overlooking?

Msmithmc,

Did you buy your truck new? If not, where was it MADE FOR? Canada? Did it have the full time headlights on the truck at one time. If you answer yes to the last two questions, that most likely is your problem. I had the same problem on a 3500 I was looking to buy. Also when I tried to dim them sometimes the lights would go out all togeather and would not come back on until you shut the truck down and restarted it. But after some research with the dealer, they found that the rig was built to be sold in Canada and the original buyer resold at auction and it got refitted with an American dash to be sold in the states. (they do alot of that in the Seattle area) They disconnect the full times lights with the dash conversion and the headlights never work properly after that. Just one thing it could be.

truck was bought new in Florida. Lights worked as normal until a few months ago, started like you said, with a click to high or low beams they would go out altogether... . clicking them a few more timesx and they would return... then two weeks ago they went to high beams and will not change. . high beam indicator on , on the dash too... . ordered dimmer/wiper switch and installed but problem didnt go away

I forget if your year has the headlight switch like my '96 or not. My leads for the headlights melted from a faulty switch, I pulled the switch out of the dash to find a lovely rewiring job ahead of me. Check the outputs on that before you do anything further. The dimmer function on mine was doing the same thing, if you lightly hit the dash on the upper left, do the lights blink?

Don't let this continue, it can cause a short at the least and a fire at the worst. One of the wonderful inadequate designs dodge is plagued with.

think I found the problem... ... had new bulbs installed a few months ago after one burning out on low beam... . Installer put 9007 bulbs in..... book calls for 9004 Oo.

Go back to your installer, then. Make him pay for a new set of headlight buckets. 9007 bulbs may share the same physical connector (different wiring, though!) but are keyed differently. Bet he had to damage your headlights to get them to fit in.

I am surprised you had someone put bulbs in for you, most grease monkeys in shops don't even wash the oil off their hands and get it on the bulbs. I didn't think the locking cam slots on the bulbs would fit into the reflector sockets, probably right, and they did break the tabs off getting them in.
