I just returned from vacation pulling my 9k tag along trailer over La Questa grade northbound near Paso Robles. This is a 7% grade for 3 miles, not high but relatively steep. Outside temps were 65 degrees.

I held 1250 EGT's at 20 PSI boost for about 3-4 minutes trying to get over the grade. I has OD locked out and could not get over 45 MPH?? Another Dodge CTD passes me towing a Goodwill trailer like I was standing still:mad:

What gives with the high EGT's an no power?? I'm confused:confused:

I didn't think you needed to worry about EGT's with a stock motor?

Any advice would be appreciated

Dave

You've already got the gauges.......

Time to do some mods.

Your EGT's don't seem that unreasonable for that low of boost. Better air filter and a larger exhaust will cool it a bit. If your worried about the warranty (Laughable at best) the EZ is a nice mod that will give you a few extra ponies. Easily removable for service work. Then modify the wastegate and you should have some good power gains and drop your EGT's a bit. Or at the least you'll gain some power and EGT's will not change. Thankfully it wasn't a flowerstroke that zoomed by you.

Ah yes questa grade, i love that hill. I dont tow a goodwill trailer, but i love to haul a$$ up that hill when going to pismo with my ford buddies. I like to wait for them at the other side and ask why them perty ford trucks with them extra cylinders cant keep up with my wussy straight 6.

Dont know what you have done to your truck, but bomb it, you will do much better up that hill. With DD3s EZ K&N re0880 and 4" jardine exhaust, I can pull that hill with a 9000 pound trailer as fast as i want. Last time i pulled it, i had to back out of the throttle as i got up to 80mph coming up the northbound side when a goof in a BMW cut me off. Egts hovered right at 1200. I do have a stick, and pulled the entire hill in 6th gear, so i know it is not an apples to apples comparison, but with some transmission mods, im sure you would do better. Yes these new motors make enough power to get hot even stock, depending on the rpm range you tow at. When running real hard, i dont go under 1800 rpm, as the egts go up.

Bill,

Didn't look at RPM probably somewhere between 2500 and 2800

4. 10 rear end gears

BUFF, hate to say it but you need to buy yourself some power. Be careful though, if you go too far with the power you run into more upgrades that are needed. Get yourself a VA or EZ and have fun.

Cuesta grade, my old stomping grounds. Loved flying up it and down it! Good grade for a test of power... straight 6 rules the hill! One year our team van broke down in the fastlane, and we had the wrestling team pushing it uphill to get it out of everyones way.

Yup, stock automatics suck, time to get some transmission work done you can get your power to the ground.

I once had a Geo Metro 5spd and it could only climb Cuesta in 3rd gear!
