I realize that there are quite a bit of threads on here regarding EGTs, but I'm having trouble finding what I'm looking for. When I first start my truck, my EGTs shoot right up to 400 degrees before I even put it in drive. Normal acceleration, I'll hit 1100-1200 pretty easy. Cruising is 800-1000 with about 5-8 psi of boost. When I go to shut her down, it will almost never go below 500. I though I was having problems with the gauge, so I sent it to Autometer to have them take a look. They said it was fine, and sent out a new probe, same problems. Any ideas? I already checked to see if the intercooler boots were torn, they look good. Also, am in the process of building a PVC rig to test for boost leaks, but would a boost leak cause high EGTs at idle?

You must have a serious problem with engine/exhaust or the pyro is way off. You should not be seeing those kind of temps at idle for sure.

I've been seeing the same idle EGTs since everything in the exhaust was stock. Is there anyway to verify what my pyro is telling me short of just buying a new one?

I would almost bet the pyro is accurate, might want to check the timing on the truck, might be retarted. Does it smoke very much? Blueish smoke would be retarded, I think.

At idle in neutral it should be nowhere near 400, it should be well under 300. I always let mine idle before I shut down and let the temp get below 300 to shut it down.

Note, In gear, (with Auto transmission) the temp will usually be over 300 some, mine runs about 200 after cool down in neutral. When it is cold out it runs even cooler in neutral, it will not even hardly get warm in neutral when it is cold out, I will often let it idle in gear just to warm it up, with the parking brake set. .

Do you still have that catyltic converter (soot burner) thing in the exhaust??

I have a 4" exhaust with no muffler or anything else in line, gotta let it breath!!!!!!!!

Pretty sure the timing is alright. The truck has done this since I got it. Set it to 17 degrees, and then rechecked it on a separate occasion. No smoke or haze at idle. Exhaust is clear. HX40 style 4" downpipe, to 4" straight pipe, to dual 5" stacks.

I do not see your cruising temps as a problem with the parts you list in your signature. mine runs about the same on a daily drive and the only way it varies is with outside ambient air temp being higher or if I have tilted the additive can a little too much. If you having cooldown issues then tune it a bit more and lean the low end out some. Since your running a HTTB2 62 I'd bet its a 65 backside and with heavy fuel it may take a while to cool down.

Thanks for the reply Hammer. I'm not too worried about the cruising temps, I was more worried at idle. How would I go about tuning it up?

My 98 runs very close to what you are describing. I have some twins that might help me out!

My truck takes a long time to cool down at an idle. Hardly ever wait for the 300f temp. Tons of 400f+ shut downs and my turbo felt just fine when I took it off a week ago. Go figure.

As far as I know it is. I was having this problem when I still had the stock turbo. When I bought the HTB2, I got it new from HTT, already setup. How can I check it?

I had a problem with mine way back in 97 and the tech at the dealer put x amount of pressure on the waste gate and the thing was wide open. Chime in here some of you Diesel techs.

What's "normal acceleration"? IE, what kind of boost are you seeing at 1200 deg EGT when accelerating in 3rd gear, for example?

I'm wondering if one of your injectors is dribbling fuel maybe? 400+ degrees does seem pretty excessive at idle.

Mike

I have the same problems I have an hx40 stage 2 injectors as well I have had it tuned three times including timing by a reputable shop. I also are 400 at idle in neutral and push 1200 to as high as 1300 pulling a 5k 5th wheel. I have tried everything I can think of. This thing is just a pig

Midnite: "normal acceleration" for me i probably see about 10-15 lbs of boost. I was thinking it could be an injector, but it did it with the stock injectors too.

My latest update: I took some advice from someone on another forum and checked my valve lash. A couple of the exhaust valves were a little loose, so I tightened them up. When I fired the truck up, temps jumped to 200, then went up slow to a little over 300. Drove around, temps seemed about 100 lower. When I went to park it, I waited for 10 min and temps wouldn't go below 450. So today, I'm going to check valve lash again, also check for bent pushrods, and am going to measure my actual cam lift and make sure I'm getting what I'm supposed to.

I see your in Pottstown and just a short drive away... .

If you would like I am free most weekends and can take a ride if you want a fresh set of eyes to sort your truck out. . Let me know... ... ... Andy
