We are in Colorado pulling our 34' fifth wheel. When going up grades the EGT easily goes to 1300 degrees (pre turbo) so I have to back off and end up getting passed by other rigs. My truck has plenty of power to go faster, but not without raising the EGT too high. I have stock fueling. Is this normal? Is there a fix, so I can use all the power available?

Your truck was designed and tested by Cummins engineers to operate all day at 1425*.

My unmolested factory original '06 regularly produced temps up to 1450* under load and held up just fine for 230k miles of hard towing as a commercial RV puller.

All of the 2004. 5 and later engines are designed and built with components to tolerate temps in that range. Use all the power potential of your engine with confidence when it is needed. The factory Cummins engine will not harm itself under full throttle full load operation. Addition of aftermarket modifications changes the situation.

Like Harvey says, they will handle all the heat a stock tune will generate.

What you can do, if you haven't already, to help reduce the max temps is add a Quad boost fooler which will allow more boost, and, remove stock muffler and replace with a less restcitive unit. These 2 mods can generate anywhere from 100 to 200 degree drop in EGT's.

As an example, I just put an ANSA Silverline turbo back exhaust on my truck. All I can say is I should have done it much sooner. It cools down much more quickly than before, more power, better MPG, and lower EGT's all while nothing else was changed. One issue I do have is that the kit I purchased had the wrong downpipe (3. 5") so I had to cut the stock exhaust piping and use it until my new downpipe arrived. It got here last night and I won't have a chance to put it on until tomorrow. As of this morning, I went 404. 2 miles on just over 5/8 of a tank. EGT's are down between 100-150 degrees on average.

I run the TST on 1/1 almost all the time. This is my first full tank of fuel after the exhaust was changed.

My next install will be the FASS pump sitting in the garage right now.

as harvey stated for smog control the egt is higher for the 04. 5 up trucks. they actually have a lower peak ignition temp and have oil cooled pistons. change the camshaft out to a pdr or colt, change the exhaust out from the turbo back, get a smarty jr and set it on default tow and change the nozzles to 35 hp ddp's . this get's rid of the in cylinder egr, lowers your egt by 300* and gives you about 40% increase in mpg. the payback in fuel savings is very fast and the oil does not get as much soot in it.

i got 15 mpg stock, now get 24 empty. with the gooseneck empty i got 17. 5 mpg at 14,000 cgw on a trip to canada to pick up a tank. 14. 6 mpg pulling a 5th wheel with gcw of 20,000. and hauling my 710 backhoe at 44,000 cgw i get 10. 1 mpg. mileage from gps, fuel from recepts. payback was less than one year. it's been on the truck since 06 and was real nice when fuel was $4. 50 a gallon
