I had the 0500 code this morning Im assuming its related to my cold weather high idle. this is the first time that the weather was cold enough and I forgot to plug in my truck. anyone else experience this with the high idle engaged?

thanks.

Yes it does on mine as well with the high idle/3cyl option as well as with the practical solutions high idler and with your foot on the pedal for extended an extended time. After a period of unknown time the ECM is looking for a speed input from what I can tell and the code has no impact on my trucks driveability. If most do not look for the code they might not notice it.

thanks figured due to this is the first time I got to witness my high idle when is got cold. at least I know it works. thanks again

Just wait till the 3cylinder cut out kicks in. I thought someone had put a bag of wrenchs into my engine! What a racket! but it does work well.

The other day my high idle kicked in and then the 3 cyl cut out. About 10 minutes later it was warm enough for the ecm to cancel it by its self (water temp went over 140) idling

I may be misunderstanding something but P0500 is the vehicle's speed as read by the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) is not working properly. Typically this can be caused by the rear tire slipping while driving off road causing a wheel motion sensor miscompare. Otherwise it may be a bad or malfunctioning vehicle speed sensor or wheel sensor.

I got the P0500 code today only after the high idle kicked in, had me a bit concerned, it makes a lot more cents.

I have heard that wheel spin can set the 500 code. I get it all the time on my truck, but it has the high idle feature. It was one of the early ones to get the TSB installed and working. So now I am not sure about how the 500 gets set!

On a side note, how cold does it need to get for the high idle or the 3 cylinder operation to activate?

Thanks

The PCM assumes that if there is continued rpm greater than idle, then there should be an associated speed from the VSS. Except it doesn't understand high idle warming up in neutral. It sees the RPM but not the wheel speed and assumes the speed sensor is inop.

The high idle program was added to the ECM later in the 2nd gen truck's production run (early 2001 I think), so the un-updated PCM doesn't know it exists. Thus, the PCM will still throw the 0500 code even if the truck automatically idles up.

If the speedo is working normally and you've been high-idleing, you can ignore the 0500 code.

The IAT sensor (temperature sensor in the intake manifold) needs to see 15* at the time the key is turned on to activate the 3-cylinder idle program.

yes it dose make a racket, yes it does speed up the warmup, yes I get a 500 code, yes my back tires slip & spin, no problem. I did notice it only kiks in after about 1 min of running. Also fast idle is kicked off with a press on the brake pedal.

The high idle comes on at somewhere below 32 degrees. Truck must cold soak all night for it to work. 3 cylinder is at 15 degrees. You can not plug in or it will not work. SNOKING
