Driving my 93 tonight n got off the freeway n the idle was up way high prolly 1200 Rpms or so as i was downshifting. Rolled up to the light and after a min it would kick down to normal. Stopped n restarted didn't help. All wires n linkage looks normal. Just had injection pump completely rebuilt at southwest diesel technologies in phoenix. Is there something sticking? Any ideas?

Im guessing a bad govornor shaft , or pump contaminants was the pump turned up ?

Im still fighting with the pump shop that did mine basicly they say too bad

No as far as i know its stock. I haven't asked anyone on here about turning it up yet because of diesel prices going up. Does it hurt anything to drive it this way?

How do i fix it? Is the governor shaft just something i can replace or do i gotta take the pump off? How do i troubleshoot to find out if that's definitely what it is?

Throttle cable frayed and sticking perhaps??? Happened to me once and i found that it was the cable frayed in the lining and holding it at a higher RPM than idle was set for. I think this was a common problem and a recall item or TSB on the 94-98 trucks.

Needless to say, but it was quite a shock at the time and glad I had a standard instead of an auto!!

Also check the cruise control linkage and cable to see if everything retracts to idle position next time this happens.

The pump needs to come apart to fix the shaft it also cost $90 .

one spot you might check it make shure the fuel line is not catching the throttel lever on the pump , the other you might check is if the return spring didnt break
