Has anyone ever had there truck run at a high idle at any given time? My 96 ram will run at a normal idle and then sometimes it will idle at about 1200. This happens a lot when i come off the highway. I beleive it may be a sticky throttle linkage? This is also causing the truck to run on when i shut it down during this condition. If anyone has had this happen please let me know

I had that happen to me about 2 years ago. It was a weak return spring on the throttle. I would open the hood and pull the linkage back about 1/4 inch. I replaced old spring (sorry, I have no idea what part number) with a new Cummins spring. I noticed the problem only when it was cold outside and coming off the freeway. I live in a much colder place now (Colorado) and have not had it stick since.

If you have not cleaned and lubed the ball joints in the trottle linkage lately, take the high idle as a warning. If you ignore it long enough you may get a stuck throttle.

You have to remove the ball joints from the linkage to do a decent job. Just spraying something on them while attached does not lube them.

All 12V's should keep on top of this. It really sucks to kill the power on you truck when it is stuck running at WOT.

I had a high idle problem and it was the pivot ball that JJW-ND spoke of. you may also need to check your throttle cable for fraying if you have not allready. as far as the running after you cut the switch off sounds like the fuel shutoff solenoid may be going bad.
