High Idle?

Just wondering, I already read the FAQ and see that the 03 trucks will goto 1000rpm to warm up. Just curious other then going to 1000rpm any other warm up features? I just recently had my 01 flashed for the 3 cylinder feature and 1200rpm idle, just wondering why the 03 only ramps to 1000rpm? I did a search of this forum and didn't see anything.

The 98 to 02 trucks can be made to idle upto 1200rpm if its below 32&deg and the truck will drop 3 cylinders to help warm up faster when its below 15°. Its a handy lil feature. So it made me curious as to what the 03 trucks have along those lines... ...

I test drove one last weekend. After we parked it, we left it idling while the dealer went inside to get keys to another one. After a couple minutes it idled up to 1000. It just seemed so cool!

I have yet to see mine idle up. When you say a couple of minutes, do you mean literally two minutes? Does it idle up even after it's warmed up? This would also be good I would think.

Steve the idle up will be noticed more when the outside air is pretty cold. I am starting to hate the single digits on the overhead displays or the ones with a - sign.

The first time mine did it I was timing it - it took 2 minutes and the outside temp was 32F.

Thanks for the reply on the 3 cylinder feature. I wonder if that would help the '03s warm up faster.



Also, while were on this high idle topic I have noticed several times when it has been really cold the truck would jump right to 1000 rpm's when started. I know this was briefly discussed before I think I even posted on the topic but I am curious if anyone got a definitive answer on whether this is normal or not.



My understanding on the regular high idle feature is that the intake manifold air temp needs to be below 32 degrees. This will activate the high idle after two minutes. Also it will idle up even when the engines warm as long as the intake air temp is below the 32 degrees.

On the day I witnessed the high idle, the ambient temperature was between 20 and 25. The engine, despite a 2 mile drive around the block, had not warmed up.



I didn't start the truck (the dealer did), and I forgot to watch and see if it did the "sudden jump to high idle" thing some have reported.

I dunno how long it took, but the first time my truck did the high idle thing it scared the hell out of me - until I figured out why it did it! Now I'm glad - it's been cold here in Northern VA this winter - finally! I've never plugged my truck in, but it's started just fine down to 12 degrees F every single time.

I have seen no real discernable pattern as to when the truck will high idle. I've had mine go straight to 1000 rpm's upon startup at temps below 20 and I've had it go to high idle after two minutes at temps below 20. I've had it go to high idle after two minutes at 32 degrees. Even more strange is that I've had it go to high idle at 10 degrees after two minutes of being parked (and idling) after driving the truck at 70 mph for four hours. I had on a winter front, too.



I would bet it's never been cold enough in Florida for the high idle to engage.
