I was wondering if it is possible to make these things last or is the bad rap legitimate. If you can make them last is it as simple as knowing how to use overdrive, maintaining the fluid, keeping shift points adjusted, cooling down in nuetral and just general paying attention.

depends on what you call high milage, I had one in a stock '98 12V, kept clean and adjusted still fine at a 120K. most guys dont know that they need adjusting and dont keep the fluid very clean and smoke them.

I have 266K on mine and it still runs good. changed the oil and filter twice in 200K miles I put on it, keep oil in the transmission and it seems to run OK. All original engine, no heavy hauling, just an 18 foot boat.

My 96 with the V-10 has 170K and the only thing done to the trans is fluid changes. I have always towed in OD, most of the time the 5'er weighed around 10k#.

310,000l on mine. Fluid and filter changed every 50,000k. Bands adjusted 2 times. Only haul a 3000lb. tool trailer. Has the regular size aluminium pan with temperature gauge, never seen temp above 150 F, Works perfectly.

Trans in mine has held up since I no-longer let the dealer service it. I still am extremely irritated by the SLOPPY torque converter and a 400 mile trip can burn the synthetic transmission oil if I put my foot in it to show up some smart elecky furd driver when I have the gooseneck behind it. 7,800 # trailer, 7-8,000 # load on top, but I change the oil and adjust the bands regularly. I had started saving up for upgrades but the blasted cancer and all the surgeries keeping me from working this year shot that to pieces. I would have loved to put in a lower stall torque converter and up grade the transmission, but no $ so not happening. Bottom line is, you can make them last with care, or you can burn them up with a good load and a heavy foot.

183,000 no problems.

Replaced filter @ 50k and 100k. All I do now is change the pan fluid every 10k. Never had a band adjusted. Was towing a 12k lb 5th. Regularly tows 7k lbs.

I always ease up on the throttle a little during lock-up. Just baby it most of the time then blow it out real good once a month.

About 260K nag-hytec pan, auxillary cooler under radiator, replaced lnes long ago to install gauge. Regular fluid & filter, adjust bands. My old cummins mechanic (he was NOT a transmission mechanic) was ardent about drain and fill rather than the corner convenience shop doing 'power flushes' FWIW—knonk wood!!

I don't know if the 47RE "cools" in neutral as you suggested. I don't know anything about how the transmission actually works but have always heard on TDR that the tranmission does not pump fluid in Park or Neutral position.

Maybe someone who knows will correct or agree.

They dont pump in park without a mod, but they do pump in neutral.

I had mine rebuilt at 145k, but it was still going good. I didnt like the slushbox effect, so I got a tighter TC and upgraded VB. Love it, not looking back. Also got the park pump mod. The mystery switch I added after the new TC really makes the difference. wouldnt recommend one on a stocker with added power.

A few things I forgot. I know I'm old.

I had a problem 7 years ago. When the transmission was cold (<55F) it did not want to shift out of first. After I had it power flushed that problem went away.

A hole developed in the cooler line where it is clamped to the engine oil pan.

I removed the "check ball from the cooler line also.
