Started truck after 30 minute stop, drove 1/10 mile at 10 mph, engine falters, push in clutch, engine RPM goes to what sounds like 2K+, Tack indicates 0 RPM, shut down engine with ignition key, restart, engine RPM goes to 2K+, shut down and restart again, engine idles normal. Drive truck home. During this event, Cruise control is off and depressing brake peddle made no difference with idle. Engine codes: P1693, P0336, and P1689. This happened two days in a row. What is up?

History: LP failed around Sep 05. Dealer said that VP44 and LP were toast and wanted $3. 3K to fix. Drove truck home and replaced LP myself thanks to help from TDR members. Truck has been running great until just recently. Wife uses it to pull her horse trailer around VA. Started running rough and stalling in Feb 07. Replaced fuel filter and realized LP was not working. Replaced LP (block mounted) for the second time. Also replaced both original batteries. Also cleaned both engine block grounds. Ran great for a week then started the 2K RPM problem. Had repeat the next day. Tach intermittently goes to zero while driving around. Been doing this for some time now.

Didn't see any similar problems posted. Any suggestions?

P0336 (M) Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor

Signal

Problem with voltage signal from CKP.

P1689 (M) No Communication Between ECM

and Injection Pump Module

Data link circuit failure between ECM and fuel injection

pump. Low power, engine derated, or engine stops.

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in Companion Module A fault has been generated in the companion engine

control module.

The 1693 is not an issue. The problem appears to be the CKP (P0336). It is located behind the starter in the side of the block. The tach going to zero is a common symptom of the sensor going bad. There have been problems with the reluctor wheel on the crank, so look at it closely when you have the sensor out.

The 1689 often comes up when the VP44 starts to fail. I would replace the CKP, have the codes cleared, and see if the 1689 comes back.

Hope this helps... .
