Before I ask these questions, I will tell you that I already know how much potential damage I can do to my engine. So, here goes. I need to turn turn my timing back up for truck pulling season. I need three measurements. I need to know how many millimeters I should see at 28 degrees, 29 degrees, and 30 degrees. Thanks for the help. Smoker

WHATS THE CPL OF YOUR ENGINE?

For every TENTH of a mm lift it is a HALF of a degree on all pumps except for the california autos.

Hey Smoker, where is your timing at when you are not in pulling season? I just had my backed off. I have a 96 with 215's 5 sp with 11 plate forward. When Ken Jones checked it I was at 8mm, he said he never saw anything that high and proceeded to put it at 5. 5. I just did a head gasket so I wanted to check it out. Power went down a smig and egts went up but I think I gained some millage. Thanks

Stupid me! My truck is a '97 with a cpl 2175. In the off season, I set my timing back down to about 18 degrees.

if you are at 18 now then your lift should be 6 mm.

At 28 it should be 8 mm

At 29 it should be 8. 2mm

At 30 it should be 8. 4mm

See how it works! Its simple but some times you have to just start writing numbers down so you don't get confused!

I've never set anything that high, what do they sound like?

... probably sounds like a toolbox that was thrown down a flight of stairs... . man, that thing must have some SERIOUS idle clatter!!

What are you running for fuel that makes that much timing necessary?

Good God!! I can't believe my timing was a 28 degrees, no wonder Iblew a head gasket. My truck didn't sound a whole lot different a little bit louder but egts were not a problem, but they are back again. I don't know if I should do this but it is very upsetting, the shop that did my timing was supposed to set it at 16, they said it worked better at 17 so we trusted them. I had no idea they would be 11 degrees off. I don't know the cpl but the truck is a 215 5 sp non cal. so it should be close to smokers. The shop is in Visalia California Gas and Diesel Performance, I need to give them a call. Should have been warned by GAS AND...

Oh well no harm done, well so far.
