Today I drove from my relatively warm & low elevation climate of eastern Washington to western Montana where it's around 4500-6000ish and in the 40s-low 50s.

I followed behind two '03s and my sniffer could tell the exhaust odor was more noticeable than usual, and it smelled like your older rich-flavored scent that many like. Then I noticed the same thing with my truck. This is with a hot engine running for several hours.

I don't recall my '01 being that way when good and warmed up. Just thought this was a curious observation, being these engines with the new injection system are supposed to be low emissions and all.

Another thing I noticed is the engine clatter is louder, but it could be the load of fuel I got at the last station.

This sure is beautiful country by the way! Saw some snowflakes along the way and many snowcapped mountains. Quite a change from the mid 70s I left at home.

Well I'm bored so just wanted to post something

Good observation Vaughn, the air is thinner as elevation gets higher so that prolly has sompin to do with it. IE; the Cummins is running richer?

cheers, Kevin

I dont know about the smell but i was in the mountains

the other day ...

and it seemed a lot louder ...

any one notice this...

it was 38 out and 7000 ft

I was up around 7200 feet & mid 30s today and yeah it seems to rattle a bit more. . . not near as much as the 24-valve did! Got snowed on a bit today too :)

It was sure cool cruising Yellowstone Park today. This time of year there's hardly anyone there and most of the park is open. It was cool & yucky weather but the extra steam cast off by the geysers and hot pools makes it all the more dramatic.

Haven't had my truck over 3200 feet yet but do notice the increased sound when temps go down below 30. At 25 below and colder, it is loud.
