Has any one seen a hitch ball that bolts directly to the frame,and only the ball comes up through the bed? This unit does not fold down but remains up all the time. A friend of mine saw one on another truck but could not see a mfg. tag or any logo. If anyone knows the company that offers this type please let me know. Thanks

Check the archive section. There was discussion going on about 5th wheel hitches and this type of hitch was also mentioned. I think it was listed in the Other section.

Are referring to a Goose Neck style hitch that sticks up from the bed of the truck? If so, check out B&W hitches. I'm having one installed tomorrow in Portland, OR. It doesn't fold down but rather pulls up and turns over when you need a flat bed. It's suppost to be the least intrusive of all the Goose Neck hitches.

If you like I'll give you a complete run down on the installation tomorrow PM. The cost installed is $499.

I have been using a gooseneck hitch made by DrawTite that has a removable ball. When it is out, the only thing showing is a 3/8" steel plate. I used this hitch for pulling a converted 31' 5th wheel from Florida to Alaska and back last summer, and sure am a believer in the reliability and convenience of this approach. This hitch is rated for 30,000 lbs.
I dont understand why anyone wants all that 5th wheel hitch gizmo & grease in their truck bed!

cjackg-I have seen the hitch you are talking about. Question, is the bed of the truck sandwiched between the 3/8" plate and hitch crossmember that runs between the frame rails? One thing comes to mind when I see this type of gn hitch. If the bed <is> tight between the plate and the hitches crossmember, what happens when the trucks frame twists if you happen to four wheel?

Its called homemade. Hardly anyone in my area has a factory made gooseneck setup, most use 1/2" plate with a piece of chanell welded to it for stiffness, on top of the frame rails and then use a 2 5/16 high rise ball and it sticks through the bed just right. Less than 100 dollars and a half a days work. I have never seen a problem, but you cant use a cheap ball made for a bumper pull, they are only rated at 10k, my ball is rated for 30k and it cost 45$.

You will not go wrong with a B&W. Sinple bolt in. No welding, or drilling the frame. Just a 4" hole in bed for ball access. A very easy do it yourself job. Hitch cost around $200 - $250. The receiver you end up with in your box can accomidate gooseneck balls, inverted fifthwhells, and they now make a fifthwheel camper style that just drops in.

A friend totaled out his ford pulling 25K trailers and just bent the ball.

The hitch is rated for 25K (conservative as we have pulled much higher several times). I have 150K on mine. We have run dozens of these at work in all makes of trucks. We used to do the homemade plate thing but this is far simpler and faster. If I was going to do homemade I would try to copy a B&W.

They are very simple and they work. The 94 hitch still would bolt in todays new truck which allows you to move your hitch from truck to truck.

They are made in a little town in SE Kansas.

Good hitch!

cjackg;

Where did you get the 5th wheeel camper conversion unit to go with the goosneck ball? I would appreciate ast. in finding one.

I have been looking at the B&W Co. which makes the "turnoverball". It bolts into the factory frame holes, I think, and is very convenient. However the safety attach points require four more holes in the bed of the truck for U-bolts. Another compay, Una-Goose, makes a similar type but the attachment holes have to be drilled. I liked their safety chain attachment around the ball and above the bed. I emailed for a clarification on how the safety collar stays on the ball but they have ignored my request.
