Some Dumb questions on towing........

Exhaust Brake Question

Anyone have any experience (good and/or bad) with the Hitchiker 5'ers? I found one today that would be perfect for wife and I. It is a 26 1/2 footer Hitchiker LS RL. I even convinced her to go look at it next week. ;)

I also really like the Alpenlites but more $$$ then we want to spend.

Barry, the RV man, hope you see this! Thanks everyone for comments!

Hitch Hikers have been around a long time and have a good reputation. I have never owned one though. Someone on this forum will have one. ;)

Paul,

They are a very good mid-priced 5th wheel. I have owned 2 and would buy another one if I wanted another 5th wheel. Both of ours lasted about a week on the dealer's lot after we traded them in.

We had very little problems with them and no problems with the slide-out mechanism.

Barry, the RV guy, will back me up on this. You are much better off buying a used Hitchhiker than one of those new entry level trailers--you will get a lot better quality and workmanship for about the same money.

HitchHiker is tops in my book. We have owned quite a few RV's over the years and the 35' HitchHiker triple glide that we bought new in 1998 is one of the best. We never had any problems with it and we live full time in it for over 4 months every winter. Everything still looks and works like new. I would buy another one for sure.

Ditto on the Hitchhiker satisfaction index. Bought my 96 Premier 36 RK Dbbl. Slide used two years ago. Great value for the money that I paid for it. It is a bit heavy but the truck has no problem towing or better yet stopping the load. Have pulled it about 15k mi. with no problems other than a blowout that did some damage that Goodyear was more than happy to fix. Good luck on your search for the 5er.

Try it, you'll like it....

My parents full time in a Hitchhiker and we have an Alpenlite. We are both very happy with our rigs.

I also agree that you are better off buying a high quality used rig instead of one of the new "entry level" types.....

AMEN! Tell me year, make and model and I'll try to put you on the $$$$... ... ... ... ... . Barry aka RV Guy.....

FWIW

Had a Hitchhiker for over 7 years warm at 0 degress and cool in hot Texas weather of 110. Traded for another brand (piece of dog *%$#). Wish I had my Hitchhiker back. A great RV in my book. And customer service from Hitchhiker factory was super.

Good luck.

Have a 92 32'er Hitchiker Premier which was/is in exceptional condition. Have had several motorhomes and trailers, but this is first 5th wheeler and could not be more pleased with the quality fit/finish of the unit. I agree with the others buy a used quality unit rather than a new entry level.

Hitchhiker

My 35'er is a 1984 and except for the fact it doesn't have any sliders and has siding, it is great and keeps on going. Won't even think about getting another one until this one falls off the frame. When I do, it will be another Hitchhiker. They are quality units. I don't think you can go wrong purchasing one.

Good unit

My old 87 30' rear kitchen has been a good unit. It is begining to show some signs of age. But if you could see some of the places I take it,you would know why. Hope to upgrade to a Alpenlite soon.

they have some awesome prices on the 2001s right now. Trying to clear the lots for the 2002s. You can get the drive off the lot depreiciation taken off... ... This can be as much as 15000. 00!!!!!

Barry,

It is a Hitchhiker 26 1/2 footer LS RL. Asking price is 25K but I haven't talked to the dealership yet to negotiate. Think the price is in the ballpark? Also, I haven't been able to find this model on Nuwa's site. Do you think it has been discontinued?

By the way, thanks to everyone else for the comments. Wish me luck convincing wife ;)

Paul

I know the unit and floor plan. You need to tell me what year it is. If they are asking $25K, it must be new... .....

The "S" model is Hitchhikers entry level model. And while it is their entry level model, it is heads and shoulders above most of the other enrty level units. I can't really speak to the value of the new unit as I only deal with "pre-owned". I can however give you a view of 3 to 4 years down the road. Last summer in July, I happened to have a '97 "S" 26. 5 RK that we took to Colo. for 2 weeks. An absolutely delightful unit. It was like new. I had paid $14,500 for it. SOMEBODY TOOK A $10,000 HIT IN 3 YEARS. I looked at a 98 in Yuma about 2 months ago that I could have bought for $15K. I don't know if it is still there. SO... ... ... ... ... ... . here is my advice: You are on the right trail. Buy a quality unit, but one that is 3 to 4 years old. The quality is still there but the big price tag is not. Those units are out there. You just have to look and it may entail traveling a little ways to pick it up... ... ... ... ... but that is why you have the HUMMIN' CUMMINS! Let me know if I can help... ... ... . Barry
