I was going to order the Hitco exhaust blanket from Geno's garage, but was wondering if it would work with my set up. I have the manifold tapped for my exhaust gas temperature gauge and was concerned about if it would cover it properly or not. Anyone out there using the blanket with this set up?

Chris

No problem

I took a 1/2" drill bit and drilled a hole in the blanket where the thermocouple mount is on the manifold.

I think I took a golf tee and stuck it in the 1/8" probe Bushing . Then I put the blanket on, tucked it in tight to where is was going to be and felt for the tee with me fingers. Where I could feel it, I marked the spot with magic marker. Then I cut a hole.

Piece of cake

I love my Hitco Blanket. I still reused it when I put an ATS exhaust manifold on.

Hey Chris, the ONLY reason I removed my Hitco/Geno's Garage exhaust blanket was I couldn't bring myself to reinstall it over my ceramic coated ATS exhaust manifold and Banks 14 cm2 turbine housing. Besides, someone else talked me out of mine. LOL

Anyway, the hole in the exhaust blanket is large enough and centered between the front three and rear three cylinder divider at the manifold outlet to allow proper fitment whether you choose to install the pyrometer thermocouple in cylinder runner 1 through 3 or 4 through 6. All in all, it's a very high quality product. The exhaust blanket will reduce in cab engine noise... that was the first thing I noticed. :)

My thermcoupler is already in. Will I have to take it off to fit the Hitco on? Seems with the thermocoupler and the line it wouldn't fit properly.

Any suggestions?

Chris

Chris,

I'm using the exhaust blanket on my truck and I too have a

EGT probe in the exhaust manifold. I just used a gasket punch to

cut a hole for the probe wires to come out. Real easy and no problems to date. At the drag strip I really see a diference in

the underhood temp. On the road, it's not quite as noticable.

Hope this helps.

Brian

Unless they have changed the design of the Hitco exhaust blanket, there is a hole (approx. 1. 5" in dia. ) centered directly over the partition within the exhaust manifold outlet with the expressed intent of allowing the user to install the thermocouple EITHER in the 1-2-3 runner OR the 4-5-6 runner. Picture this; if the exhaust blanket is correctly installed, the thermocouple will either be touching the front edge of the hole (1-2-3 position) or the back edge of the hole (4-5-6 position). There is NO reason to drill or punch additional holes in the exhaust blanket.

Chris, you will have to disconnect the thermocouple to install the exhaust blanket... unless you wanted to slit the thermocouple hole in the exhaust blanket to one edge (not recommended).

John,

I didn't have a hole in my blanket for the probe. Hmmm, wonder

what I got from Geno's?? Oh well, by punching one little hole (aprox. . 25") mine is fitting great. Thanks for the info.

Brian.

The wife tells me that she hears enough of the turbo to bother her.

Can anyone who is using this blanket tell me if it reduces turbo whine?

Thanks.

K Man,

I didn't really notice a drop in the turbo noise level after instaling the blanket. It still sounds beautiful to me... ...

How could someone NOT like the turbo whine?? Arrrrrggg, it's a

commie conspiricy I tell ya!!... ... ..... :D

Leave it to a women to complain about one of my favorite features. :) :) :) (my wife says the same thing)

One of the guys that has one would have to say for sure, but I would guess it would not. I don't think it covers any of the turbo, just the exhaust manifold.

That's what I was wondering. Thanks.

Looks like Rob is enjoying the blanket. :D

One quick note on the Hitco exhaust manifold blanket. Mine is probably a little older than most of the other members. It also has been on and off a few times.

Try work with the blanket gently. Reason, I had glass fiber's everywhere when recently took mine off and punched a hole in it for the Pyro T-couple. When I was finished, it felt like I had sand in my eyes. :( I also had minor skin irritation on my arms too.

Wearing long sleeves and goggles is probably a good idea. :)

I really liked my blanket but have removed it to help with faster shut down and to keep the EGT lower longer. I got mine last year and it had a hole for the Pyro already in it. ;)

Kodiak and Chris, I didn't really notice a reduction in turbo whine with the exhaust blanket installed, just a marked reduction in the Diesel knock and valve train noise.

Hey Rob, I didn't want to pull an "Evan" on ya. :D

John

Did the blanket effect your egt's in any way? A couple of guys have inferred that their cool down took longer and that it ran higher in general. Sure would like to cover that ugly manifold. But I do not want to sit around waiting for it to cool down any longer than I have too either.
