HO 6 Speed Noise in Neutral (louder than engine)

Is anyone experiencing a knocking noise in neutral at idle. It is not doing it in cold weather.

I have noticed a slight rumbling (for lack of a better term) coming from the transmission on mine. It goes away when you depress the clutch pedal. Several others have noticed noise as well. Probably it is normal noise and we are only hearing it due to the quiet idle of the Cummins but would be wise to check the fluid level.

Yes I have the noise. It is due to low lubrication level. Tell the dealer to fill it up like it is supposed to be (1/4" below fill plug). Mine was a little more than an inch. Added fluid noise went away for the most part. Jeff

Hey folks,

While we are on the subject of Lube for the 6 speed anybody know what the weight of the oil should be. All the tech manual says is Mopar Manual Transmission fluid with no fluid type description . Thanks DODGE.

I called Dodge today and talked to the parts guy. He looked at a bottle of the lube specified (P/N 4874644) in our manuals and told me there was no weight marking on the label. He also told me it was about half the price of the synthetic stuff they sell for the NV4500 trans. I checked mine today and it was full. It looked like runny gear oil.

So I still don't know what goop they put in our trans but it looks like it's not synthetic.

By the way, my rear diff was a quart low, the front was 1/2 quart low and the t-case was 3/4 of a quart low!

At least the synthetic oil for the rear axle is a reasonable price too. Not much on that baby is cheap, that's for sure. :{ Wife says if you want big boy toys, you pay.

Yes I Have it too, took it back to the dealer the mechanic said the noise was normal, it was just the sound of the cluster gears spinning with no load. I also have the knocking or tapping noise sounds like a valve tap or exhaust leak, dealer could not hear or find that one, more noticeable when cold, you hear it most between shifts.

I think the trick to getting your mechanic to hear problem noises (that he can't identify) is to make sure you choose one that has not been married and hence, developed selective hearing.

When I was at the TDR Nationals this year, I talked to an engineer from New Venture Gear about the NV5600. He told me that the viscosity of the lube was 5W30(same viscosity as some motor oils). I don't any more specifics on the lube, but when I installed my fast coolers, I just got some from the local dealer.

The oil in the 5600 transmission is a 5W-30 synthetic motor oil!

Wayne, do you think it's really synthetic or just some Kmart grade junk? The Dodge parts guy says it's only about $2 bucks a quart.

According to my dealer parts guy, he looked up te number and said it was a synthetic 5W-30 motor oil. I will be changing mine in a couple of weeks using a very high quality synthetic 5W-30.

OK I'll bite,

If it is indeed synthetic motor oil then why are we supposed to change it out after 30K miles acording to the owners manual and the tech manual. If I remember correctly the 5 speed super special synthetic fluid was good for at least 100K miles or more. 5W 30 sounds correct as an oil weight because when I checked mine it was really thin for gearbox lube. I would think that with a synthetic lube the change interval would be a lot higher. Jeff

Well, at Wayne's recommendation, and since I was looking for maximum protection in towing situations, I have just installed Amsoil's 80w-90 in my 6-speed - and while that SOUNDS awfully heavy, wasn't really all that much heavier in appearance than the stuff that came outta my transmission...



Other than an early-on apparent tendency for some slight gear-grind going from 2nd-to-3rd - which seems to go away once warmed up - all seems well - but only about 30 miles over several days back and forth into town since the change...



I would suspect and expect that a somewhat heavier transmission lube might also lessen internal gear noises, but my transmission was quiet to begin with...
