I sold my '99 and got this HO and feel it is down on power.

A friend of mine sold his '00 to get an '03 and said the same thing.

My '99 was and auto with 3. 55 and my '03 is 6 spd with 4. 11.

I already realize I screwed up getting the 4. 11 and really see it in the mileage. I have a freind going to put in the 3. 73 for around a grand, but I still feel it is down on power.

I just joined this site, but read some posts. I take it the Comp isn't out yet. What is the difference between the Comp and EZ? I understand a diesel fairly well I suppose, but what does each do and how are they different? I don't want to make this thing too wild, but need something to get it going. Which is the biggest bang for the buck, and are there pillar gages available for the '03 yet?

I straight piped this thing a couple months ago ... ... will either make it sound better?

Jeff,

Your 03 H O should dyno at 250+ hp your 99 if stock should dyno @ 185-190 there should be a noticable diff/ improvement w the 03. If your truck is a 4X4 spend around $500 for some 315/70/17 BFG at's and get the desired change in the diff ratio. For your desired application, An ez should be fine (70HP) and should help w/ mpg (1-2 increase) and be easily removed for trips to the dealer and is apx $2-300 cheaper. also how many miles do you have on her? Many suspect there are several mileage incremental upgrades built into the PCM. It gets stronger when it get more miles on it.

Your first focus should be on the gearing. The 4. 10's are not loading the truck and not working the turbo w/o a load. to illustrate this point look at the differences in hp at a recent dyno event. a built 01 was putting out only 360HP in 3rd lockup when we went to O/D (more load) it went to 436HP.

Stay with us and we will get you up to speed :D

Best regards

Diesel Dan

The comp/ez thing is a little different with the common rail. The ez increases rail pressure, the upcoming comp or whatever they are going to call it will be timing and pulse width but not rail pressure so they could be stacked. I think diesel dan was right on with his advise. Their are 3 gauge pillar mounts out now from several vendors. Lastly, lots of folks have found their exhaust tone more to their liking when they put in a muffler rather than just straight piped.

With the 6speed and 4. 11's it may not feel very fast. Get a few thousand miles on it, then maybe add an EZ. For a stock HO, the EZ makes a huge improvement, as I am sure some can testify too.

Power upgrades are coming along, and this motor responds well to the additional power.

Thanks for the info guys!

I did the calculations, and the tire swap will get me to within 2% of the gear swap. (Ted) The friend of mine that is willing to do the gear swap has worked on diesels all his life and agrees with the loading theory and also claims that the trend has gone to taller gears in the big rigs as well.

This motor has just shy of 15K (14,8 something), and I am still yet to break 15mpg ('99 did 20 easy).

One thing I have noticed, if I short shift at 2,000 RPM and keep the motor between 1500 and 2000, I get a little better mileage, but that's a lot of shifting. I prefer to do the 2-4-6 or 2-3-5 or some combo depending on traffic, and run it on out to 3,000.

Looks like I am going to do the EZ and see what that gets me.

I did tow a tri-axle trailer loaded with a Ford 4000 and bush-hog the other day, which is way heavier than my horse trailer with three horses or my race car hauler loaded with car, 4wheeler and tons of tools ... ... . (guessing 12-13K#) ... ... . that's the beauty of a diesel, it acts the same with 8K# as it does 13K#.

I know this sounds lazy, lol, but are there links available for a muffler (preferably one that fits stock location) and the pillar gages?

Thanx again

-Jeff

BTW, Ted was looking at the wastegate the other day. I think he is thinking of tearing into it as soon as I get a boost gage ... ... anybody played with theirs? There is not alot he can do without a mechanically timed pump.
