Are they saying to put these in BELOW the filter , so any air going in through these MISS the stock air cleaner?? If so I question the ability of those little foam sponges to filter good enough.

You'd have to mount the little units with the grill side INSIDE the air box?? Because if you mounted them from outside in with the grill then on the outside your engine would suck those little blue sponge filters right out of the units and through the motor.

I think they'd be a real eyesore mounted from inside out . Would stick out about a inch ,the cute little grill would be hidden???? Oo. :-laf

I drilled 6 or 8 holes in the bottom of my box and the minder immediately quit sucking down. Mine would suck to 30% the day I drove it off the lot. I didn't put any "pre" filter in the holes, but I don't offroad my dually either. I didn't notice mt aFe needing cleaned any sooner after drilling the holes. Those "pre" filters would be a nice piece of mind though!

I'm confused by this. The air intake is from the bottom, then through the filter. Making holes below the filter has no impact on filtration. IF the foam were to suck out of the housing, it still couldn't pass through the air filter to get to the engine. The inserts just act as pre-filters, similar to the foam sleeves over BHAF units.

I cut the whole bottom out of my 2003 airbox. Makes checking the aFe PG 7 filter easy! I don't take mine 4-wheeling or on dirt roads if I can avoid them. Ran it last winter like that and did not draw any snow in either. That would be a stretch but someone would think of it! Sunny days and Sundays! Otherwise she sits in a nice heated garage and looks pretty until next tow season.

Same here... mine's swiss cheese... the filterminder doesn't pull in at all.

With the holes drilled, was there an increase in turbo whine? If so, then I gotta do it.

Not really since they also installed the silencer baffle tube between the airbox and turbo...

Steved,

Well, I gutted that baffle tube thing last weekend. I took a hacksaw and ran it through the tube to get rid of that X or Cross type baffle. I think I notice more turbo noise now. So I'm thinking that since that baffle is gone, maybe opening up the airbox with a hole will allow that turbo noise to increase. Any thoughts?

I managed to scatter 14 2" holes throughout the bottom of my filterbox. I have an X-intake with the AFE PG7 filter that I usually run, but when it gets dirty I just swap until I have time to clean it. I don't notice any difference in anything other than whine... more with X-intake.
