The other night I was playing on my truck...
I replaced the air filter with an Amsoil unit about 14 months ago. Still pulled the filter minder down about halfway.

After the recent trans improvements I could pull it down about 2/3 of the way. After reading the recent air filter debates (K&N) I noticed somebody mentioned an improvement if the air duct into the fender was removed.
THEY'RE RIGHT!

I highly recomend it! Can't budge the filter minder now. A bit more turbo noise too. That alone might make it worthwhile for some.
Yes, it is a bit of a PITA job but...
Remove the top of the air box and filter. Best if you undo the clamp at the turbo inlet and remove it as a unit.
Remove the funky plastic nuts holding the air box base down. This best accomplished by lightly clamping a needle nose vicegrip on to them and pulling up on them as you unscrew them.
Remove the box. Remove the duct.
Reinstall the airbox. You need to pull up on the nuts as you tighten them. This is the hard part.
Install the filter and lid. Don't forget to tighten the clamp to the turbo inlet.
Let 'er rip!

I am curious to see the difference in filter minder reaction with a stock (paper) filter after removing the duct. I don't have one so I can't provide feedback...
