No, I'm not kidding. I hit OVER 1400 egt (pre turbo) this past week. There were some extenuating circumstances though:

Towing a 10k fiver that's about 12'6" tall (read towing a barn sideways down the road) ... I was in Colorado heading up the only straight road in the damn state (don't remember which one). I had been going up a grade for about an hour into a hellacious headwind in 6th gear at about 2000 rpm (floored), egt's were running around 1050 for this entire hour (basically i was running the sh%& out of the truck) Well, after an hour this hill turned into a mountain and I had to shift into 5th, and when i dropped back down on the go peddle BOOM that autometer guage spun farther than I thought it could, past 1400 (could have been 1600 for all i know, i just glanced at it when i shifted and as it passed 1400 i let off the accelerator). Oh, and this was around 6000' above sea level.

ps. . my truck sure is glad it's home where there is air to breath!

It is beyond my ability to reason, why DC doesn’t a put pyro gauge in the damn truck. The thought that you cannot exceed safe temperatures with a stock truck is bull****. Why in God’s name don’t they put the damn gauge in the truck?

Same reason they deleted tailgate trim, side mouldings, and lights in the sun visors...

They are CHEAP.

Glad I got an "old" 2001, and not this '01. 5 crap.

Evan... many of us feel the same way, but about the early 2001s!

Deleted side moldings, etc. ! That is why there is chocolate and vanilla... and we have the right to choose!

'01. 5 may not have a couple of plastic pieces a light on the vanity mirror but I sure LOVE the disc brakes. Sam

If I ever find the high-level, well-paid moron who made the decision that a pyro gauge is not cost effective, I’m going to make my own pyro gauge by ratchet-strapping his face to my exhaust manifold, and asking him—like when you go to the dentist—to raise his left arm when he feels the EGT is too high. :D

I just came off a trip with my 5er, and I too found that I could pass the safety line pretty quickly with my stock truck. However, I loved the way I could sail up those hills. I look forward to the day when I can add a few things to make it sail up them even better. :p

Hey, Load your truck up to max GCWR tow up a hill, and completely melt down a cummins, then Take it to the dealer and tell them it's their fault and they have to fix it, because no one said anything about "Pushing it too hard" and there are no warnings in the manual.

Then if they turn you down,, sue 'em for the price of the truck, and make them put pyro's in all their trucks from now on.

LOL.

Could happen.

But if not,, it would be interesting to find out someone did burn theere Cummins down, and Sue Dodge, for Neglect. (or Whatever)

Yeah Right!

They Didn't put a pyro gauge in for this one reason. 98% of the people that buy these trucks would no know what the heck to do with it. And I feel it would run some people off. Some old man that just knows he needs a truck to pull his trailer will not buy one that you have to try and stay on top of EGT all the time. They just want to drive it and thats it. My truck with an EZ cannot exeed 1200* if I wanted it to. 95* outside pulling a trailer at WOT in 4th gear for over a half mile(I know its not that far) but at 2700RPM(it would not pull anymore) It stopped at 1200* pre turbo and stayed there. JMO but I think and autometer pyro gauge looks alot better than a stock "accurate" guage would look. I imagine it would just have a bad and a good mark on it lol.

I'm looking at post turbo, but I pushed it WOT in 5th up some long hills at high altitude (over the 8200 ft pass). EGT wasn't as bad as I had heard on this forum from others. Still I had one eye on the road and the other on the gauge.

I would have to think that DC would keep this engine in safe conditions with all those computers and engineering.

My '84 Cheby defueled automatically with high EGT. That actually meant anything over a speed bump. Does DC do the same? I have seen referals to the HO defueling but have not had time to research the threads as to why. Anybody have an answer on this?

I'm getting my gauges in about a week. It will be interesting to see what temp I can hit. I'm stock except for the air filter, air intake, and exhaust; I pull 7K lbs. at an altitude of ~6,000; and it's getting hot here.

John_P is helping me get a pod and some gauges together so I will tell you what a totally stock ETH does pulling at gross here where its flat but hot and sticky... ... ... ... . Pete

When my truck was stock, I could get EGT up there! on a trip through Wyoming I was pulling an empty flatbed trailer (it weighs 2600 #) I could easily hit 1100... ... that is as far as I like to take it. I put a Boost module and elbow on it stock and it dropped EGT down to 900 MAX!

now I can hit 1100 with 34 psi but that is not untill over 100 mph empty :D :D

EGT Temps.

DMurdock,

I've also had mine climb pretty good. Loaded w/ Lance slide-in. On my first trip with pyro installed going up little Red Hill pass on 285 over by Fairplay, temp hit 1350 passing a big rig. I let off the throttle as I was really surprised how easily EGT's were climbing.

Second time I was getting reaady to climb from Dillon east to the Eisenhower tunnel, I maintained 65 mph all the way up w/ EGT's hitting 1250-1300 no problem. Not even close to WOT! Carefully monitored it all the way up letting off to keep EGT down. By the way, not one vehicle was keeping up with me either. :D

My truck is totally stock also.

Heck, I was hitting past the 1100 mark in a stock truck - empty! (going up a grade at 75 mph) Then with the PE box I hit 1400 a few times for a brief moment.

After the install of the complete Bank's Power Pack (and seeing boost in the mid-upper 30's... . 39 lbs once! :D ) I haven't seen the EGT's rise above 1150. The Bank's kit is supposed to defuel at 1200 but I haven't hit that mark and haven't felt it defuel once. Of course I've only pulled about 7000 lbs up a nice grade since then. Perhaps a 10 or 15K fiver would do the trick?

I'm sure DC would be happy to (insert sarcastic voice here) reflash the ECM to prevent future problems like this from happening.

Even if they did include a pyro from the factory would anyone trust it? After my oil pressure gauge acted up I don't entirely trust it.

seems to me that the motor would govern or defuel itself before melt down. isnt that what the computers are for? anyway, joe donnelly had a very informative article about egts and how they relate to all of our series b engines. if anyone could find and post this thread, it would answer some of the above questions. i cant seem to find it now, but i think if you just punch egt into the archives you'll find it.
